ICEWM: Wuxbuntu (686) Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Tue Feb 11, 2014 10:08 pm

The big-balled baconfaces of the BBQ Team are proud to present the
very first release of Wuxbuntu!

Wuxbuntu is a new Linux distribution that brings together the extraordinary
breadth of Debian with a fast and easy install, regular releases,
a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default
and a commitment to technical support for every release.

You get a distribution that is:

* absolutely committed to free software, every end-user application
on the
CD is free software

* 100% free of charge, and the Wuxbuntu team is committed to keeping
Wuxbuntu free of charge

* security updates for the distribution at no charge forever

* updated to the latest desktop and kernel and infrastructure every
six hours!

* supports x86 processors

For more information, you can turn to any of the following resources:

Wuxbuntu Website: http://www.linuxbbq.org

The website contains some basic background on Wuxbuntu, an
overview of the project, information on how to get it, and
some documentation for the software.

Wuxbuntu Wiki: http://www.linuxbbq.org/wiki

The wiki is a shared web space used by the Wuxbuntu community to
develop new ideas for Wuxbuntu. Anybody is welcome to edit and
add to the wiki.

Wuxbuntu IRC Channel: #linuxbbq and on irc.freenode.net

The Wuxbuntu IRC channel is your best place to start for help and
discussion about Wuxbuntu. We aim to keep the signal-to-noise
ratio as high as possible on that channel, and on all community forums.

Wuxbuntu Features

* Simple and fast Installation

Wuxbuntu comes on one single CD, with thousands of extra packages
available online. The install is optimised for speed and
simplicity. Wuxbuntu has excellent support for laptops, and can also be
setup in a minimalist server configuration.

* IceWM

Wuxbuntu ships IceWM. Wuxbuntu is a great way to try out IceWM if
you have not already experienced its speed and simplicity.

* Dillo

* First class productivity software

Xcalc and gsimplecal

* X11 with improved hardware support

We also worked hard to detect as much hardware as possible,
simplifying the X install considerably.

Wuxbuntu can be installed in full desktop mode. It works well on
laptops and desktops. Wuxbuntu is secure by design - a key goal was to
ensure that Wuxbuntu was as safe from attack
over the internet as possible after a default install.

Thanks to the team of professional and volunteer maintainers who have
worked so hard to bring Wuxbuntu to life, and also to our rapidly
growing community, who have provided excellent testing and ideas for
the future of Wuxbuntu!

"Wuxbuntu" is an ancient Mongolian word for "grumpy offensive assholes",
and we think it's a perfect name for an open source community project. In
that spirit we invite you to join, to contribute and to share Wuxbuntu
with your own community. Our next release, the Hairy Eyeball, is due
in six months time. You can help to shape it by joining the team
and contributing your own expertise. See you at #linuxbbq on
irc.freenode.net.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, seriously:

- IceWM as default WM, preconfigured
- file manager: the ultra quick rox-filer
- browser: the blazing fast dillo
- xarchiver, mupdf, gsimplecal, lxappearance, leafpad as gtk-2 applications
- Human theme and Hoary wallpaper
- all scratching 300MB

It's really not as bad as it seems. Give it a go :)

Ok, you got me reading all that and thinking "what happened to our Baconator?", and then you joke about it? You really have no care whatsoever about my feelings.

Anything with the magic letter combination "buntu" in it is a must try out. Found it quite nice in fact. Everything worked, even on my old laptop which can be quite uncooperative when it comes to graphics and wireless. Did consider an install for a moment, but then came the news about sidbang...

Thanks for reporting back. Honestly, I still run it on the laptop (and typing from it right now). A nice "on the stick" system maybe :)

Yes, that is a good idea, or maybe try it out on my eeepc, I have a small partition there
for "other" stuff that is not being used at the moment.

Anyway, i love it. Although i didn't even use Linux in those days. I still thought OSx was the best. Silly me.

I really like this one. It is not fancy, or anything, but it is a good little system.
