NOX: Bowlful (i686) Development Notes

I'm very happy to announce the immediate availability of the development release "LinuxBBQ Bowlful", a noX edition for 32-bit that runs on a Slackware 14.1 base.

The kernel in this release is version 3.10.17 (the "longterm" release kernel), the base is built with only the full A package set (REC), and a sane selection from the AP, L (some libraries) and N package sets, as well as sbopkg for easier installation of moar packages, ncdu for visual representation of the file system and UnionFS-Fuse for the creation of bootable snapshots. This means, you have working bbq tools (careful, not all of them do work here!), dialogs, alsa, mpg123, DHCP, gcc, make, tmux and gpm.

Please remember that this is a development version - it is installable with "sudo bbqinstaller", though this hasn't been tested fully. Snapshots can not be created with "bbqsnapshot" yet. The bash aliases are not linked to slackpkg, so please read up on how to use slackpkg and sbopkg.

Slackware has an excellent documentation online, be sure to use it. In a nutshell, most things can be managed in /etc/rc.d/, for example network in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf. If you want to have DHCP running on eth0 in the live session, run "sudo dhcpcd" after booting up. You should be connected in no time.

Read more in the superb slackbook: http://slackbook.org/html/book.html

This release is intentionally kept pretty minimal - no X server, no framebuffer terminal, no additional extras like python (if you install it with 'slackpkg install python[TAB]' you will also be able to use VIM instead of VI).

Please report back how things go -- if libraries are missing, please google first, actually everything can be downloaded from different mirrors, and installed using "installpkg FILENAME.tgz/txz/tlz/tbz. installpkg is like dpkg, slackpkg is like APT. ;)

And before you ask "But why another Slackware?"
The answer is quite easy: slackware is a pretty huge distro, it fits a DVD or a half dozen CDs. Of course you can go Salix or Zenwalk, but they don't offer noX versions. I wanted to have a kind of 'netinstall iso of killx', but one that comes with some bbqtools, GRUB2 and sudo, and that can be put on an ISO, shared and remastered. So, a bowlful of Slack, you just need a pipe and a lighter.

Happy Slacking!

Upload ongoing, please wait (30-60 mins) until the servers are synced ;)

Well, of course I'm going to have to smoke several bowls full of this one! :D Excellent! Life is a bit busy, but will test ASAP.

Ok, I was already thinking that the poll would go in this direction. Exquisite.

Well, I got it installed and running, with some "learning opportunities" along the way.

An interesting challenge.

^ Nice, thank you for installing and testing. Were there any problems so far? Something odd?

Just a few things that were not too difficult to fix. I'll wait and see if anyone else tries it before I say more; might just be operator error.

If it's an operator error, blame me ;)

btw I wonder that/why fbcat/fbgrab works :) Though, on my desktop with onboard nvidia nothing really works :/

Nice one. Slackware for the real men (and women, of course).

Bacon, did you use Slackware Live to build this?

http://slackware-live.tuxfamily.org/

Getting ready to install, will report back when I can... :D

Nearly, I only used the slackware-live to create a bootable ISO from the filesystem, but the base is built from A (and AP taglists) in a chroot. Else it would not be possible to have an ISO that boots on other PCs (there is no official Debian-style live-config/live-boot bundle in Slackware) :/

First challenge: can't seem to get a network connection... I have a static IP address, and usually running "netconfig" as root, and entering all the details does the trick, not so, so far. Even opened rc.inet1.conf to double-check settings, everything is good there. Hmm... continuing onward...

Changed my mirror in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors to a local mirror, but no net yet, so no update/upgrade.

Will continue to test and report back...

Ok, I'll place this in place of Void 32-bit and go slacking for a while.

Installed it. Everything's fine. Now let's go with the fine tuning and the ricing. I'll be back with a scrot in the proper section.
Great work, MB. :)

Got my usual tools via slackpkg. Everything worked.
Now only X left, facing a couple of errors but I'll make it. Promise. ;)

The regular slackbook is a bit dated, take a look at the "beta" version :)
