LinuxBBQ XFCE4 “Proof” (i686)

Unread post by machinebacon » Sat Jan 05, 2013 5:23 pm

Let’s imagine a world in which XFCE4 uses less RAM than Openbox. Let’s distill XFCE4 as what it is meant to be: low in resource usage, forgiving in disk space, and only spiced up with a handful of decorations and themes. This remix is called “Proof”, and it proves that 1) XFCE4.10 is a great DE, 2) an installed X system with desktop can be distributed as 300MB ISO without “bloat”, 3) an installed desktop can be smaller than 1GB in disk space, 4) XFCE4 native compositing is flawless and looks stunning without weighing anything in RAM (I repeat: no difference!), 5) the BBQ will never die. We’ve taken the bait (the masturbait!), so hide your kids and your wives.

Kernel: liquorix 3.7x
DE: XFCE4.10
File manager: Thunar 1.6.1
Display manager: LightDM
Terminal: lxterminal
Music player: deadbeef-devel
Media player: mplayer2
Editor: mousepad 0.3.0
Web browser: roaster
Webapps: fog’s photostream (thanks for the awesome wallpapers GeekGirl!), google maps, wikipedia, youtube, BBQ Upgrade Warnings
CLI tools (see Virgin/Boner)
all locales provided, so internationalization shouldn't be an issue

the BBQ will never die, it just keeps burning all day and night long, people roasting their meat on the open fires, getting crazy and dancing to strange music and drinking or not, making noises and chanting prayers for their Dogs, happy and open in the glow of the ember, united and divided, all and one.
the BBQ will never die.

Downloaded and running well from the live session. I will install it on the test machine later today. The live session is using 104M with thunar, roaster, and 2 x lxterminal running.

@all you good guys: glad you enjoy it
@apprentice: shouldn't be big differences technically, maybe the kernel works better or worse on some systems. this one is the first release that is 'pure sid plus bbq' and i wanted make sure that it works.
@paolo: e17's newest version will be coming, but not on priority yet. as for now, apt-get install e17 will bring you e16.99999 :)

Very nice, xfce idling at 110MB - leaving 16000 available :-)

Feedback:

the reboot command in th the live media is looking for systemctl - looks like some systemd leftover from other releases

after install, when creating users, adduser fails because of /etc/skel/***/deadbeef/socket - when deleted adding users works

No adobe source fonts :-( - is there a .deb somewhere?

Nice job.

Thanks!

1) It's not a leftover. The regular reboot doesn't need sudo (see sudoers), the systemctl call is linked in case somebody would replace sysvinit with systemd.
2) noted
3) http://sourceforge.net/projects/sourcesans.adobe/files/

Felt like I have to try... to ...grill

running live

first time trying Roaster!! LOL

But this is a old and low end self made computer.
it has been collecting dirt for too long.

now i am thinking of giving it some life:
a headless box, sitting at a corner, with one 1TB usb disk ,
and use it just to share files over home network with other computers

can it be done? of course with lots of help from forumers here ???:):)

help needed on how to do it..

thanks
