NOX: Dirty Laundry (686) Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Sun Jul 13, 2014 3:40 pm

This one is for Launfal:
^ Funny you should say that (and thank you, by the way) because I've been trying to modify the Author setup for my own rig. I just don't have the time to do the modding I would like.

My needs are simple, so a 686-nonpae no-x (xorg and 64-bit for writing? why exactly?) spin of author, without emacs and worgrinder, would be just about perfect. Replace the vim suite (I don't Latex and I don't write screenplays) with the plugins from http://wynnnetherland.com/journal/reed- ... or-writers and that's handled. Git for version control of manuscript versions (once I learn how), add powerline for tmux and vim, and bang, all done. I don't even use fbterm anymore since without tinting, backgrounds on tty are just distracting. Colorscheme to suit my mood and I'm good.

If do my occasional printing on my wife's WInbox, and I won't even need cups/hplip, and thus no systemd for a while, either.

Oh, and I'd lose Wordgrinder, too. I love the idea, and I've been trying to dig it, but without printing and spellcheck, I need vim around to write with anyway.
So the Dirty Laundry comes with these things on board:

- optimized to run as live session
- 3.15 kernel, 686-nonPAE
- succubus color theme (changeable and sticky with 'fbcolors')
- tmux with powerline, mem-cpu-load and weather (defaults to Akron, OH)
- vim session with airline, pathogen and pencil
- spellchecker aspell (en)
- lpr printing system (does probably/surely require additional steps depending on printer, please open a new thread for support)
- ntfs-3g with fuse (so you can mount Windows drives)
- one-click automount
- printfile (by GekkoP) for instant printing
- catdoc and antiword as .doc converters
- git and tig (for visual browsing through the git branches)
- tpp text presentation
- irssi with xmpp (jabber)
- fb session included
- auto-login in TTY1 and TTY2
- installable ("hidden" as 'sudo bbqinstaller') and snapshotable ("hidden" as 'sudo bbqsnapshot')
- all other BBQ-typical programs are of course installed
- bonus: zsh, ksh, csh, yash, dash, bash, git-sh shells ;)
- ISO size: 261 Megabyte (249 Mebibyte), installs to <800MB

I did not get rid of Wordgrinder, tho - sorrrrrry :)

Just a quick update on how I've been airing my dirty laundry.

Interwebz went out yesterday, so I fired up the USB and played around with the spin, and holy crap is this thing nice. So far, by favorite plugins are vim-lexical, vim lite-correct and pencil, and I got a lot of work out of them. A long writing session, and it went so smooth that I almost forgot I was on a live session, but fortunately I remembered Bacon's warning, mounted my document partition and saved the chapter.

then, reboot, print a copy for the wife, scrot the screen for posterity and life is good. Now that I've got a little feel for how the tools work, I won't be lost when I use it out in the world.

Next up, learn git.

Oh, yeah, the scrot or it didn't happen. The headliner here is the wordcount at the bottom of the vim screen. Life was good yesterday, even if I couldn't surf writer pron. That's right, that first number? It's a 4.

Oh yeah, Dirty Laundry FTW, indeed.

sweet - with git, I reckon you could write anywhere, with a rebootable USB ported net connected computer!
relatives be like "WTF have you done to my windowz?"
"Seek, and Ye shall find"
"Github | Chooons | Site"

^ "I closed them." :D
It's funny how we used to be able to do real stuff with rudimentary computers, but now we can't. -- ratcheer
