CWM: Egeszsegedre! (586) Development Notes

Unread post by machinebacon » Tue Jan 19, 2016 4:23 am

Because the previous release was well received - but bloated - here's CWM on a Jessie. The applications included are briefly: xorg, xterm, cwm, suckless-tools, gnuit, tinyirc, nrss, nano, ncdu, mpg123, links, tmux, ceni, alsa.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxbb ... o/download

Have fun and report back. (It should actually work as good/bad as Kocsonya, the only fix is in env-info)

Test Machine: T42 Thinkpad
Running: CWM
Install: Booted from unetbootin flashdrive
Apt-get updated correctly and installed iceweasel.
Tried Video playback in fullscreen using html on youtube and it was stuttery. Tried naughty flashplayer same result. Played fine in normal mode with both flash and HTML. Sound works fine. Wireless working with D-link Airplus G.

New wallpaper is very nice julius.

Attached Htop scrot.

Running live on virtualbox. All good. Will install it in a minute.

BTW, what a discovering gnuit. Thaks for including it. I saw it in kocksonya and thought it was some odd part of evilwm (had zero previous experience with it).

No idea what iceweasel version ships with jessie, but sure it needs some about:config tweaks for smooth playback. AFAIK, default settings never do it. Will test and report back.

Thanks dear people.

Darry, can you start iceweasel from a terminal and check if there are some interesting things coming out?

Also check http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=124283 for what Snap mentioned.

Works wonderfully :) I must say, I am quite pleased with Jessie. Sid has been my daily driver for the last ~2 years, but Stable is a treat when I am working with slow internet speeds (1.5 mbps) and not wanting to update daily.

And thanks snap for the heads up... I would have just blamed my shoddy connection :D

With the tweaks it goes somewhat smoother, but it takes a while buffering (blurry playback) untill finally getting 720p. I hardly ever use it this way. I use the "play with" plugin just to run videos in mpv instead of the browser shit, but it's not working in jessie, at least here and... mplayer has no installation candidate ATM in Jessie? Only mplayer2. I think I'll get mpv from the backports or git.

And yes, for the rest, it all seems very smooth.

BTW, switched to openrc minutes ago and I'm getting some weird messages at boot. Will stop the scroll at the next boot and will check what's going on. All the switches I've made in Sid spins had no issues. But here it shows an apparently long list. Haven't tried switching inits in jessie until now.

no idea, I never used openrc in Jessie and for live ISOs we can anyway only use systemd or sysV in Debian - so, the way it is by default.

You can get it from deb-multimedia. Indeed no mplayer in Jessie repos.

Hi Julius,
Apologies for the late reply here is a screenshot of iceweasel during html youtube playback starting with launching iceweasel.

The OpenRC warnings went away on their own. Just booted this morning and all clear. Darn good.

Thanks darry, so XFCE4 is coming next? ;)

The warnings have (unfortunately) nothing to do with a stuttering playback in FF. Maybe you can try chromium (or the real google chrome) once.

Hi julius tried Chromium and it made no difference. I'm convinced it is my machine and a driver problem and not the distro.

Installed it and works great.
I had only one issue, but solved.
The Pro/Wireless 3945 ABG didn't work (hardblock blabla in ceni) and the button on the laptop wasn't much of a help either.

I installed 'rfkill' and put the following sentence in /etc/rc.local
rfkill unblock all

After that I could configure the wlan with ceni, perhaps it's only my stubborn laptop... but it's now working great :)

Code: Select all

echo 1 > /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state
# or
echo 0 > /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/soft
# where rfkill0 is the device (check /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill[0..9]/name)
