Re: Kielbasa Release News
Thanks, Rho, but I wouldn't bother with it. The file on the server is on the byte exactly the same as I have locally, and the same as I tested in VirtualBox on the scrots above.

EDIT;

It's official i am a trad.
i dd'ed my usb stick to the file 8o

shouldn't have c/p'ed from wikipedia without looking at it properly.
maybe i should go back to xp, late last night i accidentally did this as root.

Re: Kielbasa Release News
Wux, I bet my dear ass that you didn't dd the stick right (or that it is broken, or that it isn't formatted) and it still has the old MATE on it. Would you do me a favour, install virtualbox-dkms and virtualbox-qt and try the ISO there?
How many MB is the ....xfce64.iso file?

Re: Kielbasa Release News
Thanks hinto, can you try:
I guess b43 is the one for your adapter.
Edit: it's not. The 43227 is the one *not* supported by the b43 module: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
On http://wiki.debian.org/wl it recommends the installation of broadcom-sta-dkms
Aptosid shows http://aptosid.com/index.php?name=PNphp ... pic&t=2102 but this is from January 2012.
Question: does it work OOTB with Siduction?
It would be good to know which instructions work, so I can write a Quick help page for Wireless :) Sorry to bother you with these things.
Code: Select all
modprobe -r wl b44 b43 b43legacy ssb brcmsmac
modprobe b43

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
^To be fair, #! doesn't see it by default. Ikey ported Jockey to SolusOS. That would be a sure-fire way of enabling wireless (after an initial wired connection)
The above dump was done using PearOS, which did recognize my adapter where I enabled it with Jockey to get it to work.

All right, PearOS is an Ubuntu derivate isn't it? And SolusOS with Jockey must be in Eveline. I still have that on a partition and have a look. Thanks hinto!

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
Downloaded rc2.
dd to USB stick.
going to test several computers,
running on Live mode, focus on wireless and network browsing..as a new user!
1. This is old Dell inspiron laptop, 2006 model.
Boot OK, without me doing anything on ceni, i click network applet around top right taskbar, key in wireless passphrase, and the wireless is working . :)
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)
try to browse network files from another computer via thunar 1.6.1
cannot browse network, with error below
"Failed to open "/on".
The specified location is not supported.
2. This is a Asus laptop. with UEFI bios, but I disable it.
boot from USB stick is OK, wireless available out of the box, upon keying in passphrase, it connect to wireless and thus internet, no issue
it has atheros AR9285.
03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
try network browsing, no, same error as in above item1.
3. This is sefl made desktop with AMD cpu and an external usb wireless dongle, model EnGenius wireless 11N
http://www.excaliberpc.com/596173/engen ... eless.html
inside it has realtek RTL8188S chip
Testing wireless, after keying in passphrase it connects to internet without issue..
Try network browse: same error as above two.
This AMD had nVidia graphic, and display is nice. Default to 1920x1080 resolution on HD monitor... :)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)
p.s. some distros had bsod on this nVidia card :(
4. Reboot the last computer, item3. but swap usb dongle with another wireless Aztech WL 552USB
this time, the computer cannot boot.
stuck around 1seconds, to 2.x seconds for several tries.
it seems to struggle on USB device, first time hang with display showing usb (some number)
second time hang up on USB mouse.
unplug Aztech dongle, display shows it was detected, plug in again, display shows..
third time. I did not unplug Aztech USB wireless dongle, let it run itself, it hangs around 2.x second, USB ( some number) then after some time out, it cotinue with udevd (some numbers) ...modprobe, and it simply loops around many times..

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
Wow wayne, thanks a bunch for this!
The new Thunar 1.6.1 just came out yesterday, so I haven't had time to check what might be wrong with network browsing. Into the blue: seems related to something like gvfs. Allow a few days for checking ;)
The issue with 4.) is quite surely related to the USB port - I have similar hiccups when I have three devices hanging on the ports. You might try following:
- Start the PC with USB stick connected (and all other stuff, too) and boot into the boot menu
- Press [Tab] in the first entry
- move the cursor down and remove the "init=/bin/systemd"
- press [Enter]
It should then boot without systemd. Sometimes it helps, but it is really hit or miss.
If this works, you could revert from systemd to sysvinit (makes boot a bit slower but is better implemented)

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
Hi machinebacon,
tried 4 with your method.
YES, it boots without any issue on USB hub.
and tested both wireless USB dongles, both working :) :)
read somewhere else, people mentioned bad experience over systemd...
may be this is my first taste of trouble with it? :(
anyway, on the other desktop I installed and used rc1, although dmesg showed something like 14.x seconds, it seem the desktop is ready for use around 30 seconds, something similar to other Debian iso...
Not sure if systemd is ready .. of course I prefer to be solid and reliable implementation, I can afford to wait 30 seconds to boot :).
By the way, I tried also to select sysvinit from the boot menu, it did not boot,
same as last post: stuck at the same place: 2.x seconds, usb (some number) and after time out, it loops around forever...

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
Hi wayne,
thanks for the update!
Yes, that's quite the same what happens here too - every now and then the kernel doesn't want to skip over the 2 or 3 second mark - rebooting helps in 99% of the cases. But it did happen with sysvinit too, so it might also be related to udev or the kernel. I simply press the reset button and reboot (in sysvinit). In systemd I noticed problems when UUIDs change. In this case it's the easiest to wait for systemd.fsck to settle and then compare sudo blkid and /etc/fstab and search for mismatches.
Just a little info how to revert systemd to sysvinit:
scroll to the 9th line and change it to:
you can also replace quiet with verbose here, some people like to see what's going on
save and exit
then update initram filesystem
and update grub
After eeboot everything should be in place. Hope I didn't forget anything :)
thanks for the update!

Yeah PearOS is based on Ubuntu, and looks like OSX (a bit). I cross compile for Windows and OSX (no Linux market yet)machinebacon wrote:All right, PearOS is an Ubuntu derivate isn't it? And SolusOS with Jockey must be in Eveline. I still have that on a partition and have a look. Thanks hinto!
...and it was Eveline that had Jockey....
BTW... Kielbasa (and other BBQ options) boot amazingly fast, even from a USB.

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
@machinebacon
Gives me wireless (thanks)
I did have to create /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
to make nm-applet happy so I could configure it from the liveUSB.
But we have lift off ;)
Making notes before installing.
I do miss the menus in the terminal (which terminal app is on Mother?) I installed terminator to keep me sane ;)
I also took a stab and added the precise repos from ubuntu for jockey (blaspemous, but the world didn't melt)... it didn't run of course, so Ikey did do some voodoo to get it to work in SolusOS.

Re: Kielbasa RC Release News
Thanks for the update!
Yes, Solus most probably uses the Mint jockey from the MATE edition or so, no idea - haven't checked yet.
The terminal is xterm (my idea is that a mother doesn't really need a terminal, so xterm will do) - it doesn't give the traditional pop-up menu, but try Ctrl-Rightclick for some basic options.
You're right about the system-connections folder, I'll add that to the notes.
