Little hints:

- Threesum defaults to awesome (no reason), to change this edit the /usr/share/xsessions/lightdm-xsession.desktop
- to install, press Alt-F3 and enter: live-installer
- no network-manager applet, please use Ceni to set up your network.

IIRC i think this linuxbbq edition has awesome 3.4, which has been updated recently but not in any debian that I know of

Awesome 3.5.1 is in Debian Experimental. http://packages.debian.org/source/experimental/awesome

*blech* i got tied up in dependencies. it wasn't as simple as removing the old and installing the shinier one. Any chance of an update to this threesum? Or is the 'experimental' making it difficult or impossible?

Without knowing exactly what you did it's hard to tell you what went wrong.

Here is one option for using Awesome 3.5.1 on a BBQ spin. I just did this tonight, so I know it works.

1. Install a more recent BBQ spin (you're going to replace awesome anyway, so you don't need to start with threesum). I like Coal for this purpose; it's fairly light but has most of what you need. You could also use Elektra, Pidsley, or one of several others.

2. Once Coal is installed, apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. You will get a large scary looking upgrade; don't worry. I just did this and did not have a problem.

3. After the upgrade, reboot and make sure Coal still boots and you can startx into LXDE properly. If this does not work, report exactly what you did and what errors you received (but again, I just did this so you should also be able to do it).

4. The experimental sources are already enabled in Coal, so simply run this command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -t experimental awesome
5. Edit ~/.xinitrc. Comment out the "exec startlxde" and add "exec awesome"

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
#exec startlxde
exec awesome
6. Log out of LXDE, and run "startx" to start Awesome 3.5.1.

If I'm bored or curious later I might try installing and updating threesum, but you're really better off using a more recent spin.

(edit) or wait for bacon to update threesum in October if you're lazy.

There'll be an update of the 32bit version in the near future (around October) with several fixes. I am going to close this thread then, and open a new one to avoid confusion.

Edit: just saw Pid's instructions - thanks Sir.

Thanks for the instructions Pidsley, I could use them on Coal.

Thank you pidsley! I started off with a live threesum, and added debian experimental to my apt sources list. Roasted off an iso, so in a way it's better that it doesn't have LXDE (hate display managers that get in the way) but awesome starts wtih a warning 'attempt to call field add_signal (a nil value)' so I'm going to try with COAL later if this does not work.

LXDE is a Desktop Environment, not a display manager. Coal does not use a display manager. In any event, it's easy to purge any portion of a spin (DE or DM) you don't need or want.

The problem you're having with awesome is probably the result of trying to use a 3.4 config file with awesome 3.5 (do you have a local config in your home directory?). 3.4 configs usually won't work with 3.5; this is one of the many reasons I don't like awesome.
awesome wiki wrote:Note that you need to update your configuration file, or awesome will fail to start (#529642) with something like attempt to call field 'add_signal' (a nil value). See ~/.xsession-errors if awesome does not start.
I found this with a simple search of the awesome wiki for the error you received.
