I'm quite delighted to announce the immediate availability of "Bloat64", the amd64 base system for grillmeisters. This is the defacto "Roast Your Own" spin, coming with an older kernel (3.5-7) and package versions before the floodgates of Sid opened. Reasons for this are increased stability, and a quieter fan.
- amd64
- systemd
- Xserver installed, no default WM provided
- smaller footprint than the i686 version due to more aggressive cleanup and lower dependency count
- no display manager
- CLI apps (abook, alsamixer, htop, irssi, mc, mutt, nano, newsbeuter, sc, tina, ranger, wordgrinder, wyrd) and BBQ tools included
- new themes (Gnome-Cupertino, Numix, Zukitwo, FlatstudioDark modifications) added
- new wallpapers by Irene (fog)

README
Basic Stuff
1) download the ISO and dd/cat it on a USB stick or burn it to CD (Windows users are encouraged to use LinuxLiveUSB to create a bootable USB stick)
2) boot from USB/CD and select the first entry in the ISO boot menu
Important stuff
3) after a few second you find yourself in a tty. The login prompt might be buried under kernel debug/status messages
4) straightly enter your username: bbq
5) enter the password: bbq
6) you will be redirected into an X session, the Live Installer will start automatically after a few seconds
Installation to HD
7) select your language, location, the keymap
8) select a partition to install Bloat64 to (Note: everything around 2GB or larger is sufficient for a normal session. If you want to create a redistributable ISO file later, choose a partition that is >5GB, at least)
9) enter username, login name, password and hostname (random)
10) select the partition or drive to install GRUB to, if wanted (Recommended! Usually the main drive /dev/sdX will do - do not choose your USB stick here)
11) confirm the summary and wait a few minutes for the installation to finish. The computer will automatically reboot, so make sure it doesn't boot from USB/CD again
Boot into the Installed System
12) upon reboot, you will be dropped into a tty. Enter your own username and password here.
13) the roastyourown package selection app will start automatically.
14) when no network is detected, Ceni will open. Generally, a wired network will work out of the box, but most wireless connections, too.
15) Choose to update the package cache. Failing to do so will render the roastyourown script useless ;)
16) select your packages. If you decide to run Bloat64 without display manager (login manager), make sure to choose "edit .xinitrc" in the Display Managers menu
17) the ambitious can choose to create a snapshot at this point, however, you are encouraged to install additional packages that are not listed in the base applications list.
Creating a snapshot
18) bbqsnapshot is a tool that copies and squashes the running system into a installable ISO file. start it with "sudo bbqsnapshot" or as root.
19) The process is pretty much straightforward. After hitting [Enter] your filesystem will be copied.
20) As soon as a dialog message pops up:
in tty: change to another tty (Ctrl-Alt-F2/F3/F4/F5...)
in an Xsession: open another terminal
21) enter:
Code: Select all
bbq-distro-defauls
You will be presented with configuration files that you could/should change to your likings (Easy!). Use [Ctrl]+[x] [Enter] to save and [Ctrl]+[o] [Enter] to exit each configuration file.
22) As last and most important step, the graphical disk usage analyzer "ncdu" will open. Navigate with the cursor keys [up] [down] and select with [Enter]. Choose the /home/work/myfs/ directory and remove those files that should not be found on the ISO later. [d] deletes and [r] reloads.
23) Keep in mind that /home/work/myfs/etc/skel/ is the folder that the newly created users will get as their future home directory on an installed system. The /home/work/myfs/home/$USER/ folder is what will be presented in a live session.
24) Quit ncdu by pressing [q] and change back to roastyourown.
25) Hit [Enter] and edit the GRUB menu presented there. Use [Ctrl]+[o] [Enter] to save and [Ctrl]+[x] [Enter] to exit.
26) Now it's time to wait until bbqsnapshot finishes creating your ISO. This can take up to 30 minutes.
27) You're done. Rename the ISO and the .md5 file that is found in /home/snapshot/ immediately.
28) Test your ISO from USB and in a virtualbox (optional).
