Release me!

Unread post by machinebacon » Mon Jul 22, 2013 7:39 pm

Dear Beards and Bald-headed Stepchildren,

the base editions of some spins are a few months old already. Usually, thanks to Sid, you can upgrade any older version; though this requires some bandwidth and time. Please vote if you want some spins/bases bumped to a newer snapshot (please also add if you want 32 or 64bit), or if you want a new roast (surprise surprise) or if you want a special edition (your wish is my condom) or if I should get a life (see attached photo).

Thanks for the participation.

I have had some problems upgrading recent Trollinger installs, perhaps because the upgrade is so large now and includes the borked lightdm upgrade (although I removed lightdm before the upgrade and still had problems). It is also entirely possible that I did something stupid. In any event, the first upgrade to a new Trollinger install is *big* at this point, so I'd like to see it updated/upgraded on the server. Also maybe Proof, because Trollinger and Proof are the two releases I like best :-) If the distrowatch listing gets any new users, this might help prevent some support questions.

^ Got the point, and that was exactly the reason why I opened the poll. Thanks Pidsley. The problems you describe are quite surely related to the gtk-push. I'll see if I can get Trollinger and Proof free of gtk3 and let the user himself bork it :)

I voted "other" first to agree with what pidsley said. LXDE and Xfce spins would be nice to be upgraded, plus a Gnome spin is all that I think is missing. So, new LXDE,Xfce and Gnome version. :) I know, I don't ask for much :P
I wonder though if I should have voted Gnome, then explained myself further since Gnome base looks so lonely up there :/
Nevermind about Gnome, I forgot about Bauchspeck :-0

Voted LXDE. Both 32 and 64, as I have installs of both.

Having said this, surprises are good! I might actually scale back to Cameltoe, I've taken quite a shine to it. One of these days I might go all cli like DJ and quit this silly X business, haha.

Absolutely. TBH I love Cameltoe, it's much better than its name and hasn't get much promo here yet.
Okay, seems LXDE it will be...

voted LXDE (albeit after the decision was already made)

I came here as a confirmed XFCE fan, and got converted to LXDE - I find it so much easier to beat into shape.

Only thing that sucks about LXDE for me is the dual monitor wallpaper issue.

re: nvidia?
yup.

Wallpaper stretches across both monitors - can't set one for each monitor.

I 'solved' it by the somewhat clunky method of stitching two wallpapers of the required size together.

Not perfect, but it will do :)

4eyes, I think this (stitching the two wp's together) is even the 'recommended' method for LXDE. Another option: no wallpaper at all :D Hey, Linux is about choice isn't it ;)

I vote for Lxde spins, I'm sticky with it (32bit) and all is ok in dual boot with Antix on a Acer LM 1355 and all is ok.
Please don't forget the 32 bit universe ... :-)

LXDE is the clear winner, it is such a nice spin.

Pidsley, now that we have converted them all - let's push something else. How about Afterstep? :D

bacon, did I see you mention that you had some problems with onboard nvdia graphics? Something like this perhaps:

Code: Select all

00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] [10de:03d0] (rev a2)
My "new" test machine has a PhenomX4 with onboard nvdia graphics, and GNOME 3.8 has crashed the nouveau driver a couple of times now, on both sid and void. I suppose I should try the nvdia driver.

Correct Pids, that's my on-board gfx. Can't tell if Gnome3.8 crashes, as I haven't installed it yet. TBH, this gfx is not even bad for an on-board solution. Can't remember crashes, except of slightly choppy Flash videos in full-screen, maybe.
Anyway, thanks for the finger :)
