Any new openbox cooking?

Unread post by missinglink » Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:54 pm

MB,
Much as I love Trollinger - and excited to hear of Coal - I prefer Openbox for daily use.
Any OB activity planned in the dev hive?
The #! variants: 32 and 64 bit Darkside, Lightside, and Penbang are inspired efforts.
256GB SSD and 8GB ram on the way for a pre-weekend netbook enema. Room enough on that cheeep SSD for several spins, right?

Well yes, there'll be something. Do you have any special wishes? Pure Openbox, and what kind of panel? Or you simply get yourself Coal and change a simple entry in .xinitrc to start openbox-session instead of lxdestart :)

Papabacon,
We're gonna get spoiled rotten with this speedy customer service.
I'm too oblivious to think of the Coal mod. Lemme dl Coal and try that. It's even got some BBQ tools I requested.
It's becoming apparent that none of the BBQs are going to get installed semi-permanently on my boxes. Nothing wrong with them. On the contrary, there's just too much fun to be had in BBQ World.
I will likely clone and squeeze the preinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 LTS into a corner of the netbook's new SSD.
I'd wipe it entirely, but I like demonstrating multiple OS's on one machine. Ubuntu is the only Linux the vast majority of folks have heard of. Certainly the only Linux box you can stroll into an American Best Buy and purchase anytime soon.
I can't say I have a special request for you. I've just added software to Penbang on my beater 32bit Toshiba. The netbook will be my main on-the-go machine. It's 64bit, but I am not needing 64bit-specific spins.
I'm way too lazy getting wireless to work on some spins. Iirc, the Asus 1015E's card connects on Trollinger, but not Trollinger64. Looks as though The Good Doctor xaos52 has made it pretty easy to finish my homework. I'm on a different box - Asus 1025C - right now. Think the newer 1015E has a Broadcom 4313.
Carry on, Papabacon - BBQ is just getting better and better.

missinglink, are you familiar with "ceni"? This always makes my wireless work; much more reliable than network-manager or wicd (at least for me).

If you have specific issues, please post what BBQ spin and network connect tool you are using, and the wireless portion of the output of "lspci -knn" thanks.

(edit) as bacon suggested, changing the .xinitrc for Coal works well to start a plain Openbox session:

If you want a panel or a different wall, you can create a file at ~/.config/openbox/autostart and put the appropriate commands in there.

[I understand this thread may be getting far afield. Lemme know if I should repost elsewhere.]

Thank you, pidsley.
I'm familiar with ceni. Couldn't resolve it - not saying you wouldn't be able to.

I'm most likely going to install linuxbbq-darkside64.iso
Neither it nor CB11-64 were functioning out of the box with the Broadcom 4313.
I'm typing this message from the BCM4313-equipped Asus 1015E, running Trollinger32 live USB. Trollinger64 would not support the wifi chip.
This is the DS03-variant that came preinstalled with Ubuntu 12.04. HD has been yanked and replaced with 256GB SSD. For once, netbook bloggers were correct: Unlike in my Asus 1025C, 2GB worth of ram chips are indeed integrated into the mobo, dammit.

This should work:
https://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211

Means: get yourself the package at http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/firm ... 1/download and save it in your home folder. Boot into the live system. Mount the home folder of your hard drive, "cd" into the directory and install the package with

sudo dpkg -i firmware-brcm80211.deb

(of course the file name has to fit), then proceed with

sudo modprobe -r brcmsmac ; sudo modprobe brcmsmac

Good luck :)

Thanks, MB.
Funny, I got so far as to land on that Debian page and download the firmware in my previous failed attempt.
My eyes ended up glazed over well before I succeeded. I've copied your instructions. Hopefully, they'll help.
Gimme some time to try once more. I'll report back.
If I can ever grab hold of the "fix broken wifi" rung on the linux ladder, it'll be a happy day.

Edit: I'm continuing this thread in the BBQ Support section here.

Thanks, MB. Can't wait. I'll continue to occupy the next 40+ minutes watching kidx's LinuxBBQ video homage.

I ended up installing CB11-64 on the netbook just to get things kicked off. Plenty of room left for several BBQs on this grill. Very excited to see all of The Team's activity.
