DRAGONFLYWM: Unia (i686) Release News
Why Unia?
Because he (dear fellow C-Archer Unia) deserves it for his DragonflyWM, which acts as the Window Manager in this *live* session.
What is "LinuxBBQ Unia" exactly?
It's not a standard Linux desktop - "Unia" is a Chromium web kiosk on the stick. The idea is to have a Linux system that boots into a browser, but also allows to store internet content on attached drives. You can do basic tasks in the CLI. The session is *not* persistent, so you leave no traces (no Kleenex needed!)
For all those who criticize Chromium ("slow, bloated, no functionality, gagaga") here's the deal: don't download it, and don't whine.
For everybody else: take a look and carry a virus-resistant browser with you. This thing will work on low-end computers (as long as they have a Pentium II chipset or bigger)
1) Download the ISO and dd it to the USB stick (size is 330MB, so a 512MB stick will work wonders)
2) Boot into the USB stick (check your BIOS for this)
3) Hit Enter in the boot menu, and wait for around 20 seconds for the system to boot
4) You will directly be dropped into the DragonflyWM session. Ceni will help you to set up your network, use Tab keys and Space to navigate and select. After Exiting Ceni, the browser will maximze.
5) Alt h j k l and Shift + h j k l resize and move the window
6) Alt-Shift-Enter = terminal, Ctrl-F3 = dmenu, Ctrl-F12 = BBQ Radio, Ctrl-q = xbindkeysrc
7) To quit Unia and shut down the PC, press Ctrl + Esc.
As always: http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxbb ... agonflyWM/
Unia, if you see this: great job man :) Thanks for DFWM

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Unia e-mailed that he's been made into a live web-browsing USB spin. :D
Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Just made an account here (thought I had one, apparently you deleted it? What a welcome! :D )
Thanks for this! It's always good to see you or your work is being appreciated :)
However, please note that DFWM (nice abbreviation!) is not completed yet! There are alot of (minor) bugs in the EWMH support so be careful ;)
I guess this BBQ spin forces me to be more active on your side, huh?

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Hello Unia and warm-heartedly welcome :)
Yes, this is a bait. Actually the spin is running a heavy KDE4 session with GNOME3 dependencies and zeitgeist, I just wanted to have you with us :)
I'm fully aware that DFWM is not yet 'stable' (as in stale), but I hope that some of the fellow BBQers can help by running the WM for a few hours and collect anomalies and report back. I've given it a dirty test-drive and hell, this WM does exactly what I want, and I love it.
I will definitely add DFWM to the base releases as soon as you see it fit. I might simply make a shortcut to grab the newest version via git, we'll see. The decision is made for sure. The BBQ will always support the Jazzers, and not the mainstream pop.
Do you have a panel "recommendation" (tint2, dzen2, something like this)? I guess DFWM respects panels and docks.
FWIW, thanks for your work and glad to see you here :)
Edit: I didn't delete any account :) There was a problem with the forums engine end of last year, and newly registered accounts between the snapshot and the reinstallation got lost. Sorry if you were affected, it was not on purpose.

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
I can only speak for myself, but more involvement from people who do work because they feel like it should always be welcome.
If I run into any anomalies, I'll either report on quick-fixes here or put in a pull request with you.

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Thanks guys! Testers are always welcome.
The only panels I tested are tint2 and xfce4-panel; both "worked" as in they get placed where the panel should be placed (note that the WM by itself does not reserve space for the panel, you have to edit config.h for this). Running applications are shown and the active one is highlighted, but that's mostly it for now. There is rudimentary support for showing applications in other desktops, but when you switch from say desktop 1 with Firefox open to desktop 3 with something else, desktop 1 will be empty in the panel. I'm tracking this bug / trying workarounds, but so far nothing has worked.

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Firefox?! :D
Okay, got it. Who needs panels anyway ;)
The crystal ball says dfwm will have a great future. Seriously, I love it - and the default bindings are excellent. The dfwm in this spin is default, I didn't change anything to keep it Unia-ish, though I think follow_mouse was enabled and created some confusion when Chromium popped up new windows.
One question, I haven't looked into it in detail, is there a way to make windows floating/monocle/tiled via keybindings (alt-space or something like this?) I remember there is an option for the default behaviour.

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Yes, you can change the tiling layout with the keyboard:
And erhm, panels where the reason I started hacking MonsterMW ;)
To be honest, what you seem to want is just pure default MonsterWM.
Code: Select all
{ MOD1, XK_t, switch_mode, {.i = TILE}},
{ MOD1, XK_m, switch_mode, {.i = MONOCLE}},
{ MOD1, XK_b, switch_mode, {.i = BSTACK}},
{ MOD1, XK_g, switch_mode, {.i = GRID}},
{ MOD1, XK_f, switch_mode, {.i = FLOAT}},
To be honest, what you seem to want is just pure default MonsterWM.

No I don't :)
Thanks for the post, I'm logged into the other computer and can't check the config file. Well, perfect then.
(The thing with the "who needs a panel anyway" was a kind of internal joke, some users *cough cough* say that panels are "bloat")

I wonder what a shitstorm I will get over me if I were to announce this on the Suckless mailinglist :Dmachinebacon wrote:(The thing with the "who needs a panel anyway" was a kind of internal joke, some users *cough cough* say that panels are "bloat")

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
Imagine, some people regard certain terminals as bloat (why xterm? eterm weighs in at 127kb...)
We're more or less pulling each others legs, so jump on the bandwaggon and declare window borders are bloat (happened!!)

If I liked window borders I would've gone with Echinus ;)
Scratch that, you're not talking about window decorations.

Re: Unia (i686) Release News
everything is bloat.
Unia, good job, and welcome (back) to the Q :)

All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.
Re: Unia (i686) Release News
The list of "bloat" is more easily summarized by the "NOT bloat" list:
Not Bloat
=======
Linux Kernel
gnu core-utils
Edit: Even though I'm pretty sure that Bacon suggested I just run pure Unix once...so I guess those would technically be bloat too.

Hahaha, pid - we're in!
I've seen something like this a few days ago, maybe even the same thing, as build script. iIRC it was an (ex)crunchbanger. Well, let's see if it can be rolled into an ISO.
