Yes, edit the file /etc/network/interfaces and remove the string 'dhcp' to make it look like this:

Code: Select all

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet

Hello

First thanks for all this sid(uction) based distributions !
Finally I installed mother on a dell e 6330 laptop. Since it is a broadcom wireless card I have to manage this with the help
given in the home directory.

Concerning locales, I had to install locales-all to avoid error message with generating fr_FR_UTF8 locales
(and also task-your-language).

Concerning grub, I have also another linux distribution on my hard-disk which is not detected during install or dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc.
Do I have to add by hand ?

Hello o.g.,

thank you for choosing the Mother :)

It's true that locales-all has to be added, we tried to shave off the initial ISO size so that the image definitely fits a CD. Sorry about that :)

About the detection of the other OS, this should be fixed by

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
after booting into the installed system. GRUB2 will then pick up all OS on the drives. May I ask which the other Linux or which bootloader it uses?

If you want the other Linux OS to manage the GRUB for you, reboot again and run

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install /dev/sdX
in the other system. sdX is the device of the hard drive GRUB is installed on. This does only work for GRUB2 (v1.99 or higher) - so if you use an old GRUB or LiLo you will have to do this manually by editing /etc/grub.cfg, if I remember correctly.

Hope it helps, please report back if it worked.

Hi O.G.
Welcome to BBQ.
Concerning grub, I have also another linux distribution on my hard-disk which is not detected during install or dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc.

Normally, installer should detect other OSes already on the hard disk, if you have specified to install boot loader.

Anyway, you can run LinuxBBQ, and do sudo update-grub to add the other OSes into grub.

Hello MachineBacon and Wayne

Thanks for your quick answer.

I understand your aim : limited space.

For the other system, I tried archbang. It is not very important, my working distribution will be mother
but I would like to have a (rescue) distribution (ok perhaps that another should be better choice).
In fact after mounting the archbang partition

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
does the job.

thanks

O.G.

Hy

I have to stop roast experimentation. For information, about b43, the README_wl file is not installed.
I don't know if mother has to recognize automatically b413 card, but /sbin/ifconfig does not return any wlan0.
On the other hand with linuxbqq-rc2-xfce on a usb key (i686 not amd64) I have wlan0 and I see wireless network.

cheers

Can you please post the name of the card and the kernel driver in use according to the output:

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk |grep net
Edit: we especially need the device number [xxxx:yyyy]

Sorry

With firmarwe-brcm-80211 and modprobe -r brcmsmac I see wlan0.

Code: Select all

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
I will try later (at home but in a few days) the wireless connection.

Hy

Wireless is ok (I can post).

A few remarks
1) if some people have touchpad problem on recent laptop (like dell e 6{234}30), no vertical scrolling facility with
synclient) I follow https://github.com/emmanuelthome/psmouse-alps on archbang and it works.
When I have time I do the same on mother.

2) the key Fn+lower/higher britness does not work ?

3) I find that boot is not so fast even if systemd is used (if I compare to archbang for example),
perhaps it is due to the number of services launched.

2) the acer trick on this forum does not work (it is normal since without this option it works under another disrib)

3) is ok, It is my fault. I do not need dhcp in /e/n/interfaces

btw... for us GUI/synaptic users

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install apt-xapian-index
sudo update-apt-xapian-index -vf
to enable the search box in synaptic.

Edit: and xarchiver so Thunar can "Extract here"

mother = systemd i guess? because in that case: try booting in verbose mode (type 'e' at GRUB screen and change 'quiet' to 'verbose' in the kernel line) and see what is causing the slowdown. probably dhcpdiscover not finding your wireless or something. or something else. otherwise, in a terminal try 'systemd-analyze blame' to see what processes take longest to start.

Hello

Thanks for your help. In fact as I wrote in a post, the boot speed is ok after removing dhcp in /e/n/interfaces.

I do not have an acer but dell e6330. Wireless is ok. However the module brcmsmac is not automatically loaded with systemd
even if I added brcmsmac in /e/modules-load.d (without it is).

The Fn Up/Down key to modify screen brightness is kernel dependent ! With 3.6.9, 3.6.10 it is ok but with 3.7.1 not.
But with/without systemd and under a kernel 3.6.9 the led (wireless up or wireless down) is always off.

As another people I have more important things to do now.

Hello

Some news about dell e6330

speed booting : ok

wireless : everything is fine (in fact I had a brcmsmac blacklist so that it was
not automatic, apt-get purge helped me)

brightness screen : the acer tricks does not work and it depends on the kernel
3.7.1 no, 3.6.9 : yes. But even if it works I do not have osd notification

wireless led control : nothing. I tested also semplice and siduction : the same.
But with Archbang I have wireless led control. So module option, kernel option compilation ?

about osd notification : because I use fr_UTF8 some messages have accented character
but osd-notification shows strange character in place. I think it considers as latin1.
It is not important because I installed xfce-notification.

Cheers
