EMULATOR: Retro Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Sat Oct 19, 2013 5:46 pm

The grill brings back the 1980s feeling: not the ZX81, not the C64 - "Retro" comes with Amstrad CPC and over 2750 games (no criminal act, sorry)!
Bonus: atari800 simulator, DOSbox and amiwm.

BOOT:
- boot into the live session, no login/password required
- select CPC Emulator in the menu and hit Enter

CPCEMU:
- press F11 to enable full-screen mode
- press F3 to get to the disk selection, choose the A-L or M-Z directory with cursor keys and Enter

- choose a game.zip file (the all have 8 digits or letters), hit Enter and select the game's .DSK file
cpcemu2.png

- you will find yourself back in CPC's screen
- enter the command "cat" to show the content of the disk ("pussy" does not work!)

- start the program (for example DISK.BAS) by typing

Code: Select all

run"disk

Note: this is the UK keymap, so " is on US-keymap @
- play ...

- press F8 to reset CPC or F12 to leave the emulator

tl;dr:
F3..............select disk
F4..............turn sound off/on
F8..............reset CPC
F12.............leave emulator

Sounds like old school fun. Brother-in-law's going to love it.

Totally old-school, yes. 8bit heaven, and shitty sound :)
If brother-in-law had an Amstrad/Schneider CPC (or a C64/128 or a Speccy ZX81) he will have tears in his eyes. Well, no :D

C64 if I remember correctly. I'll show him this one (and I'll play too, of course).

See, I wanted to include C64 (with VICE) but unfortunately it is very hard to find games (legally). But it is planned for the future, with some tricks.

Upload will finish in around 2.5 hours, network is shaky today :(

Got it.
Boots fine, I picked CPC emu in the menu but it got stuck at the logo. On tty it's saying: I/O error cannot open printer file PRN. This happens with every option I chose from the boot menu (nice Wall-E pic there)

Can't reproduce, sorry.

The PRN output is unimportant, we have no printer connected anyway. How about pressing Ctrl-Alt F1/F2 etc. ?

There should be a screen saying "CPC Emu" with an emu (an animal, it is), then press F11 to fullscreen it.

CTRL+Alt+F1 brings me to tty. There is a screen saying "CPC Emu" but F11 does nothing and nothing is loaded after that screen.
I'll try on another PC, don't worry.

Strange. I've tested on three PC's now, and it all works nicely... maybe there's a problem with the keymap? You can edit the .xbindkeys file via the tmux entry and change/remove/add "setxkbmap it", save and exit, then in the menu press Ctrl-C and let it reload.

Works here, putting my tiny py-hacker to work on it right now. (Thanks for the tl;dr in the release notes. :) )

Damn, it's just me then. I just tried with another laptop, using that "setxkbmap it". Weird thing is that DOSbox, atari emu and amiWM works fine. Everything is actually working. How long does it take to pass the cpcemu logo on your machines? (though the light on my USB key is not blinking when I chose cpc emu from the menu, so I suppose it isn't loading anything)

You're not alone
I just had the exact same thing as you Gekko.

took a couple of pix.
Image

amiwm runs it fine.

it just sits on the emu splashscreen.

Same as yours, though I don't have those ALSA lib errors.

So why not running CPCemu in amiwm?

-> open a terminal, cd to cpcemu-1.7 and run ./cpcemu or ./cpc6128

I just didn't want Gekko to feel left out 8)
I will indeed use it in Amwm, and i love what you've done with the .amirc

I just tried 'cpc' in a term window.
I'll use those instead.

OK, so if that works I might remix it and add one point in the menu that reads "CPCemu in amiwm", so everything is covered.

Wux, wanna have an amiwm release with shit like "worker" as file manager? ;)

Gekko and Wux, can you do me a favour and remove the .cpcemu.cfg file from the /home/bbq/ directory and try the first entry in the main menu again? Thanks in advance!
