OPENBOX: Pony Muncher Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Sat Oct 26, 2013 3:46 am

We got Cookies, but we also have Ponies of some sort. Many people regard eating horse meat as simply wrong, so we decided to go for the little ones, like what veal is to the beef.

LinuxBBQ Pony Muncher is Cookies on steroids. An Openbox hybrid session with following set of applications in the saddle:

- Google Chrome browser with Flash support OOTB
- Thunar File Manager
- urxvte terminal emulator
- Gpicview and Mirage as picture viewers, feh for quick previews
- Leafpad and Emacs24 editors
- Zathura PDF viewer
- Meld diff viewer
- Filezilla FTP client
- Sylpheed Mail Client
- GNOME Mplayer
- gtk-Recordmydesktop
- gtk-Redshift
- Pidgin Instant Messenger
- of course all CLI tools in a handy menu
- ansiweather, battstat and memstat added to Bash

New features are added, unique to the BBQ:

- Panelizer
Switch your panel on the fly. Right now, Pony Muncher lets you pick from XFCE4-panel, LXpanel, tint2 and dzen2. All preconfigured.

- Waitress
After installing and booting into the new Pony Muncher session, the Waitress will help you setting up your system: set keymap, set default panel, choose release model (static or rolling kernel), add PAE support, change kernel to Liquorix or Debian vanilla, change to aptitude, add APT helper tools, etc.

Of course it all fits a CD (613MiB/647M)

KNOWN BUGS:
Idiotic me has added the wrong gtkrc-2.0 to /etc/skel, so please manually edit:

Code: Select all

nano ~/.gtkrc-2.0
and change the first entry there to

Code: Select all

gtk-theme-name="NumixGrey"
or use lxappearance. Sorry and thanks!

Okay, since I'm at work...I had a testbed AMD a10 with more RAM than anyone should ever need. Thought "Sure, I'll test out your spin there."

It's sharp looking, I'll give it that. The stock background and newer bootloader screens are a nice touch. I like the looks of the dkeg PS1, and the panel chooser works very well with the exception that hitting the cute little "X" button doesn't fully kill the switcher, it just respawns. The close button works, though, so that's not a game-breaker. "Nut Nutrition" is fun.

It's got more things than I'd ever use...but it's actually a really solid spin, with some really nicely riced-out extras. I would recommend highly to OB junkies...and even with all of that fun stuff, and me switching out panels and opening up a bunch of little programs...still was using right around 125MB ram. Will have small girl test as a alternate to Munchwhistle later on...see what she thinks, since she actually likes OB and panels.

Yes, doesn't catch on fire or cause angry ants to crawl out of the floor and eat me. Didn't have to unpack ISO and chroot into environment and import virgin for demonic sacrifice to get it to boot.

(Trying to give some detailed feedback...rather than just saying "It's bloat" like I normally would.)

Edit: It's bloat.

Oh - that is munchy.
Downloading now...

Q: Are the new goodies (bash configs, panelizer, etc) available on github or somewhere? Or is it best to run new stuff in vb and copy it over?

Thanks (und Entschuldigung!)

Of course I have to try this out, looks like a good one. OB is still my favorite WM bloat.

@fog - good to see you around the grill. Wanted to let you know that your photos have a permanent place in my bookmarks, really enjoy your work.
