WINDOW MAKER: Meat Curtain Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Mon Nov 04, 2013 2:51 am

LinuxBBQ "Meat Curtain" is a no-GTK desktop featuring the Window Maker work environment, running on kernel 3.11-6. The Window Maker environment can be configured to the max (either using the WPrefs tool or by manually editing the relevant files) and is very low on resource usage. In fact, Window Maker is the unbloated variant of GNUstep (Release "Golden Shower"), which has more native tools.
To be as GNU as possible, there's Emacs24-lucid added as default editor, along with a few X11 applications, but everything else is TUI only.
Though Window Maker feels a bit "old" compared to modern desktop environments, it is still actively developed and the version on this release is from August 2013.

Give it a try, especially if you run an old (or very old) computer and need a comparably snappy and light desktop environment.

You know, WindowMaker isn't half bad, pretty light on resources, really, and can be made to look pretty good. Reminded me of my Slack screenshot from earlier this year:
