XFCE4: Absinthe Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Mon Nov 11, 2013 12:29 am

The follow-up to "Proof", kind of.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxbb ... o/download

For your own sake, download the rev1 version. The installer won't create a new user then, and this is by design. You reboot and log in as root, add a new user, exit and log in as new user again. By doing so, you get the cleanest BBQ experience, especially with regards to creating a remaster.

If you download the older (slightly larger) version: after installation and reboot
- log in a root with your password, and create new users as you wish (adduser/useradd)
or
- log in with your username and 'bbq' as password which you change with sudo passwd

Love the name. I still have my original Proof install running -- it's one of my favorites. Downloading this one now.

factoid, from a guy who used to make Absinthe - or at least grow the plant. The old way was to distill it cleanly, or something.
Then due to huge demand they cut corners and simply flavoured the raw alcohol with the plant.
Thus leading to crazy motherfuckers cutting ears off.

so looking forward to trying it. 8)

Thanks so far.

Actually this can be stripped down in some ways:
- if automounting is not needed, get rid of accountservices, gvfs, consolekit, upower and udisks*
- if there is no need for desktop setting, change the .xinitrc to load xfwm4 (or any other window manager) and create a ~/.autostart file (it will be sourced by .xinitrc)

I would recommend users to try Absinthe as their test release for stripping. By changing startxfce4 to xfwm4 in .xinitrc, you can save around 15MB in RAM, and around the same by removing the automount-complex.

On a side note, xaos' console-colors script is included, also the 'dkeger' script to set Xresources and the fbcolors script to set TTY colors. Also, there is raffles and raffles2 added. Thanks xaos for the contributions!

@wux: from what i've gathered, there used to be wormwood in absinthe, which is a psychedelic. this is where the 'green fairies' talk came from. nowadays, it is just green alcohol. you know anything about this?

Historically, wormwood was the main ingredient.
wikipedo wrote:Adding to absinthe's negative reputation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, unscrupulous makers of the drink omitted the traditional colouring phase of production in favour of adding toxic copper salts to artificially induce a green tint. This practice may be responsible for some of the alleged toxicity historically associated with this beverage.'
I think what he was trying to say was they used to process it with the plants, then filter it, or do another process to clean it. but to make more - they skipped a part.
anyway.
My guy explained it a long time ago. when my French was only just passable.
And he could have been talking out of his hat.

But I'm a gonna d/l this puppy and raise a jar to Bacon

Downloading rev1. Since I'm on a testing spree today, I'll try this one as well.

First version works so well (even on my old Athlon XP box) that I'm now downloading rev1. Great job.
