OPENBOX: n00b ki11ah Release News
I hereby prematurely post the release announcement for what I think is the best BBQ release so far, "n00b ki11ah" (the '11' is pronounced like a turkish R or a balkanese Z, as you like)
Why it is "11a besht"? (Editors note: the 'sh' is pronounced like a consonant of your choice in a language of your choice, I don't really give a damn, to be honest this time) Because it is absolutely not GUI. Not even a bit. It's not even GIR1. No hand-holders like obmenu or obconf. No tintwizard and no auto-mount. This release is just as good as any no-X spin from which you can build up and RYO.
Openbox-fanboiz, stop jerking off to fake-lightweight distrolets. This is "11a 11eal zing" (the 'z' in this case, is pronounced like "rub my viole(n)t dyke" in Uzghur)
No, seriously, it's good. 330 something MB download, so it expands to below 1G.
Saucefork: http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxbb ... ox%20Base/
Moneyshot: All applications are TUI only.
Browsers: elinks, links2, w3m
Filers: ranger, mc, vifm
Editors: nano, mcedit, vi
Media: raffles, bbqradio, mplayer2, mocp, alsamixer
Office: sc, wyrd, calcurse, wordgrinder
System: env-info, htop, ncdu, bbqsnapshot
Other applications and tools can be accessed via debian-menu or in the BBQ cli menu.
Of course some UNIX games are provided, too.

I love how while other distros are getting more bloated, the bbq spins are getting smaller and more simple.

If you dare :)
It's basically a netinstall plus X plus Openbox, so the dependency count is super-low. Maybe in a virtualbox first :) You can anyway create an installable ISO even inside virtualbox.

Re: OPENBOX: n00b ki11ah Release News
Well, I just did an Arch Linux install Saturday evening. It didn't have Openbox or X, initially. When they had me install X and test it, it was twm - talk about old School!machinebacon wrote:If you dare :)

I then installed awesome wm. That's pretty cool, too.
Thanks,
Tim

Wow, is Arch so bloated? And even with the minimal spectrwm (though 64bit).

Re: OPENBOX: n00b ki11ah Release News
systemd seems to make a difference, that's why Proof (sysvinit) was the lightest 'full' desktop - same setup, just systemd instead of sysvinit made a difference of cca. 30%

Re: OPENBOX: n00b ki11ah Release News
I like the option of going straight to fb session, rather than x, in n00b ki11ah. You've all ruined my taste for the GUI, haha. I think for my next Slackware installation experiment, I will try doing so with no gtk or qt apps/libraries. Either that or I will just install killx and build from there.
Edit: killx is 64-bit, my work boxes are 32. No killx love here. :(
