I've been inspired by the recent
Ludum Dare and DJ's
daily programming thread.
I think it would be a fun idea for us to have some sort of similar competition - a theme is selected at the start, people that want to participate hack away on some cool projects and meet back here when the time is up.
I'm more than happy to organise this - I have a lot of free time for the next month.
We'll also need some judges that want to mark people's projects.
If people are up for doing this, I think we need to decide on the following:
- Time scale (I am thinking 48 hours or so)
- Topic ideas (I am thinking we select 10 words or so and then randomly select one)
- When to do this (I am guessing weekend will be good for people)
Let me know your thoughts. :-)

Oh I like the idea! <signs as judge>
48 hours sounds reasonable, because of the different time zones we can make it +/- 6 hours
Topic ideas should be from those who are judging, so that nobody of the participants has an advantage.

I think that sounds good to me, can we make polls on the forums so we can decide on a date?

Sign me up for whatever you need. I could probably use it myself, and that gives me a good excuse to not post up trivial challenges for a couple of days and load up the 'idea tank' again. Not promising to spend all weekend working on something, as I tend to get outside and do meatspace stuff when I have time...but a few hours here and there could totally happen.

OK, I created /usr/bin/hacking and probably all users can start polls and topics. I'd prefer to have each 'challenge' in a new thread, except the daily challenge which has already started :)
If somebody has a problem with creating a poll, please let me or any other mod know :)

Great idea even though I won't be able to participate as a non coder. :)

^ you can participate as judge :) Or give an exercise. The more judges we have the better. Else they try to bribe ;)
