I know Mate runs perfectly fine on 2 GB RAM and less with systemd, so I have no idea what happens in your case. Including the apps you use there it should not eat more than 90% of your RAM. Either conky is lying or you have 50+ tabs open. :)

Show us htop.

^ That.
<Offtopic> @David
I bloody love a stripped down and neutered Mate, on a "core/minimal" type install. Me gusta! Will make one this weekend. Sorry got emotional :)

^That's what I was thinking. I never configured it for the CoreDou. I think the problem might be there. I am trying out this spin with cwm that starts with an "E" ( which I can't remember how to spell, lols), and am on the text browser, so this forum looks kinda funny. Simgin I saw you! I know me and I probably had about 5-6 tabs open in Iceweasel ;) I have to get back off and make my delivery, but I will be checking back in a couple hours. It's been one of those loooong days, lols! This cwm isn't too bad live- thinking of installing it, but still have Violator to try to figure out!

Crap! I almost missed you, Bacon! when I get to my final I will boot back into the Mate and check that out. You could be right. I got the same ram readings in Openbox with only the conky running.

On the other hand, maybe it was just the computer. The screen just went balls up on me.It looks great at the grub screen. As soon as the system starts loading-not just on this OS- the screen goes black. It does it with my Mint Debian and my LXLE and Q4 as well. I guess it's time to shop another used laptop, lols.

I am on my phone. So far the diagnostic has failed my CDROM. I have an IDE error status 28. I noticed some buffer errors on sr0 with both the ISO's that I burned. The LCD graphics test passed. The memory tests will take forever. I just don't know! The BIOS screen is bright and solid.

My screen is back- I don't know for how long. I fell asleep while the diagnostics was running. My wife woke me up. The diagnostics passed everything except the cd rom, so I rebooted, and here I am.
This is a scrot of the Crystal desktop I just installed. I haven't done a lot with it, yet. I am just happy I have a screen for now.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G86M [Quadro NVS 140M] [10de:0429] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:01fe]
Kernel driver in use: nouveau

It makes sense that the GRUB screen is crisp (it should be as crisp as a framebuffer session), and later when X kicks in, it uses the nouveau drivers for your gfx. I think many of us have cried several buckets full of tears because of this.

Your card is the Quadro NVS 140M, you can try to install the closed-source nvidia blob:

https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

You need the headers of your kernel (so for example, 4.2-0-trunk headers), the build-essential package and of course the nVidia drivers according to the highest supported version:
either the more stable 304 ( http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 5153/en-us ) or the newer 340 ( http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 5164/en-us )

Later you can add nvidia-xconfig to let the system create an Xorg.conf file or do it by hand: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsD ... figuration

Do this on a non-production machine or partition, it might happen that X doesn't start at all. In this case you will have to a) fix it or b) revert to nouveau

(There is sgfxi from the smxi scripts that can do this for you, I am not a big fan of it, so first DIY and don't trust external scripts)

I am back on the phone. The screen died. I have a monitor at the house that I am gonna use until I can get this used Lenovo Think Pad I have been drooling over, lols. I will replace the screen later down the road. I just hope I can get enough juice out of my invertor to run both at the same time. Lols, jk! Will post up a scrot of the Violator I had just installed when screen said, "buh-bye!" as soon as I get home and get that monitor out of the junk room!

Make sure your machine doesn't have nvidia sickness, and not a dead screen, before replacing the screen.

Some times, an external monitor will work, for a short time, if it is the graphics card.
Worth a try maybe.

If it does, see if you can disable the discrete card in the bios, and use the Intel graphics until you figure it out.

Otoh, my older dell did not have that option...

My attempt at Violator. Still have to learn the keybindings and have no idea how to do anything with the screen, fonts, borders, time and date, etc.
Totally lost! just hammering away, lols. But it appears to be working :) I am using on old, used Dell CRT monitor (this f*&$%r is HUGE! lols). Screen on laptop is definitely out. Pain in my brain will guarantee me buying a nice, used ($100 ) Lenovo Thinkpad sometime in the near future :))
Hope you guys are having a great weekend!
