You have this in your .Xresources:

Code: Select all

*transparency: true
Try this:

Code: Select all

*transparent: true

^^ that's strange, here it works with "*transparent" and it seems that some documentation (also) uses this "transparent". Might work with both for URxvt, but not for xterm.

@pidsley Wow! I was using the "transparency" because I found it in the wiki for URxvte under "Software". Kinda like the meme machinebacon posted: Mind Blown! lols!
You guys have had a lot of patience with this noob, and I am learning more about Linux here in the last few months than I have stumbling around Linuxland for the last fourteen or so years!
I have never had so much fun with a computer! :) And you are the greatest bunch of guys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting!
Off-topic: the chauffeur of legumes in the dumpster was totally in the wrong. I read that thread, and he definitely wasn't listening- just complaining.

almost time for a new username ;)

well done man.
to give an alternative opinion: i spend a lot of time in the terminal as well, but on my last install i did have transparency set up. i find if the wallpaper is good for it (in my case geometric, centered, etc), it doesn't distract. i imagine a landscape shot might work just as well.
the only difference here is simply how our minds work. i accept the distraction (cause i like how it looks) and work with it, whereas Bacon and Wux simply do away with the distraction. different minds, different methods.

anyway, good job :)

^^ Yes; I like a *little* transparency with a rather dark background, and I don't find it distracting. If I didn't use transparency I would never see the wallpaper :)

I have been reading a bit on tmux. I have quite a bit more to do before I challenge that peak, lols! Have also been trying to figure out tty. That is just a bit mind numbing at present, but if you keep looking in the dark long enough the eyes will adjust ;)

Switching to TTY is easy:
1) press Ctrl-Alt-F2 (brings you to TTY2)
To get back to X press Alt-left/right arrow key (scrolls through all TTYs, in LinuxBBQ the Xserver is usually in TTY1)

But you can use tmux straight from the tin in X, framebuffer or TTY. Follow me, fearless:

2) enter "tmux"
3) by default,
Ctrl-a is the prefix key. After pressing the prefix key, you press the actual key for what you want tmux to do
Ctrl-a t you will love this - it shows a clock ;)
Ctrl-a " and Ctrl-a - split the screen
Ctrl-a c creates a new window
Ctrl-a arrow key switches from one split window to the other
Ctrl-a x kills the active pane
Ctrl-a ! (that's an exclamation mark) moves a split pane into a new window
Ctrl-a ? shows the default keybindings
If you have totally enough of it, enter "exit" or "killall tmux" ;)

Be sure to read and edit ~/.tmux.conf too.

If you are in TTY (you don't need to be) and you want to take a screenshot, you need the package "fbcat" and issue:

fbgrab scrotname.png

But I recommend playing with tmux in X first.

I had to come back to x to post this. I really need to study the links manpage. I couldn't add a scrot with links. It just would not let me input on that "add file" line. It probably new how ugly the scrot was and didn't want to get involved, lols! :))
But, here it is!
??!!
or isn't, lols. I opened a pane "fbgrab ~/scrots/fb.png" but all I had when I went to upload it is a blank png file. Just a big square of white.
I'm not going to blind you with it,lols!
I uploaded it, because sometimes the preview doesn't work, but a preview after the upload confirmed: big white square. I was actually in the screen you get after you login- I kept Egeszsegedre where x has to be started manually- so maybe I'm not doing it right?
It wasn't that ugly, btw. I have a really nice blend of purple going on :)
Oh! If I Ctrl-F3 to just that big empty screen with the flashing cursor, can I do anything there? Ctrl-a didn't seem to work, Just curious.

One after the other:

1) no upload: don't worry, this is one of the limitations of links/w3m/elinks/lynx. You can try one of the many filehoster upload scripts (IIRC pidsley and dkeg use those, simply search the forums for "imgur" or "upload image")
2) at least it did something. There might be a module (png, jpeg-turbo, netpbm) missing - check if "netpbm", "libpng-<some_number>" and "libjpeg-turbo" are installed. There are some versions (-12, -16, -3), I have not the slightest idea what the offer in Debian Jessie. You can't fuck up much.
3) yes, you took the fbgrab in the right location
4) Alt-F3 showing a blinking cursor is indeed normal - it means that the TTY is not in use and not started through inittab. In order to get TTY3, 4, 5, 6 be active you have to edit the /etc/inittab -- though, no... don't do it yet. The risk of fucking it up properly is much too high. You can take a look at the file, and maybe you understand what it does:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/inittab
check the part on the bottom where it says

Code: Select all

# Note that on most Debian systems tty7 is used by the X Window System,
# so if you want to add more getty's go ahead but skip tty7 if you run X.
#
You see that some lines there are commented (they have a # in front):

Code: Select all

#3:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
#4:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
#5:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
#6:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6
If you are brave, remove the # in front of these lines. Be careful.
Or just live with TTY1 (serving X) and TTY2 (serving - well, noX)

Thanks, machinebacon! You saved me from a G-search that contained everything except what I really wanted to know, lols! I understood from that tty tutorial that some tty's are assigned to specific functions, so until I figure that out I will not play with it (but that blinking cursor is just sooo enticing!)
I was missing all those libs, so just installed them.
I will hopefully be sending you guys a scrot after I finish this 600 mile day :)
