Why has the conky got those big seemingly random letters on it?

I have no idea, lols! I just liked the fact that it was transparent and slim (not taking too much space).
I still haven't figured out what the device name for my wifi is, either- the reason the network and weather don't work :(
I've tried Wlan0, Eth0, Wlan1, Eth1, but no luck so far. It will happen, though, lols!
Another thing about that conky- It turned my Lenovo T500 into a HP Pavillion!
I'll figure it out, or just go conky-less, lols!
It was just an eye candy idea, anyway :))
Sir! Put down the hammer and slowly step away from the computer.

sure.

Code: Select all

ip a
should give you a list of network interfaces - although if the network doesn't work...

I got it working :) What a name, though: wlp3s0
That's a mouthful, lols!
The weather is out, It required installing and configuring conkyForecast from github, in addition to registering with weather.com.
I found that the xfce4 panel has it's own nice little weather applet, with only a handful of libs to add :)
but, ol' noo_b has struck again with the old ~/.Xresources problems (will I ever learn). I can't get it to load- it keeps going to the backup- but I can't find the error. I have actually been looking around online for a nice, new, shiny one,

Code: Select all

Copying colorbar to /home/chuck/.Xresources_colors
xrdb: colon missing on line 22, ignoring line
chuck@hello:~ $ xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
xrdb: colon missing on line 22, ignoring line
This is what happens when I run dkeger. Now I have looked at line 22 in my .Xresources, my .xinitrc, and my .Xresources_colors, and I can't find a missing colon anywhere on line 22 on any of them, smh!
I looked it up online, and apparently xrdb does this with upgrades and such, but I don't remember any upgrades involving xrdb,
I'm sure there is only a syntax error with my .Xresources or my .xinitrc, so I keep going back and searching them for something, but I just don't see it.
I think I'm gona take a day to clear my head and look at them again.
Sometimes that works.

AND IT IS DONE! lols.....
Here is noobdesk, running pekwm with compton, a conky, xfce4-panel with a volumeicon and a nifty little weather widget :)
The background came with Cardboard- the bbq spin on which this was built!
Thank you, again @machinebacon for bbqlogin,start-wm, and all the other scripts and advice you shared!

I'm not sure where to go to do that, but I could just put my noobdesk-start(pekwm) here....
I still have to get lxappearance to start and run in the background (what I'm ddg'g tonight), but as soon as that gets worked in properly it will be good to go!
Yeah, the conky, lols....with that background the transparency was no good, so I had to pick a background color quickly to "kind of" match what was going on around it. I will probably be searching around for a closer color match in the very near future. I think I tried to lessen the transparency first, but to tell you the truth I was so tired from trying to get my head extracted from my arse that night that I might just have said, "Enough!" and took the easier route, lols!

Yeah, didn't want to say it outright, y'know we've all played with conky at one time thought it was cool, then maybe realised it spent more time being covered up and using resources than actually being useful as a system monitor, I mean you don't look at the engine gauges all the time on your lorry do yah? maybe on starting and if it feels a bit funny.

once you eliminate all the bells and whistles, the few stats i think you really need are: battery, and load.

To display load, i usually just do it like

Code: Select all

ps --no-header -eo pcpu,comm,pid | sort -nr | sed 5q

display top 5 processes, alias it to something.
rice no more.
