There's too many better options to feel obliged to stick with OB. But, if it suits your needs, enjoy. Just no tunnel vision

I tried to get a scrot with the menu selection (just pushed the "PrtSc" button), but no tomato :( Everything showed except that, lols.
Ivanovnegro, I have to agree! I had it so screwed up at one point I actually had to nano the menu.xml file from the terminal! I had cut the menu up, lols!
Now I'm off to unify these fonts!
^I hear ya, dkeg! I was actually wanting to play with spectrwm, but I was a little intimitated about building it, and I saw a new post on Space Oddity and decided to revisit that first to get my feet wet.
I've got extra disk space for more! :)

Spectrwm is in the repos. No need to build anything. Of course you could.

^^ but you got us, and you'll be fine. Like ivan says, just 'get' or 'ins' it. Lots of spectrwm users here too.

The latest spectrwm spin I could find was Baconator (2014). I'm not sure that will upgrade well, but I might be able to build it on Space Oddity and try out that bbq login script, or add slim?
I would like to try out the Baconator. That Emacs looks interesting!

Well, another openbox.
This time on RYO. I started with spectrwm, but I'm going to have to study how to do a correct .xresources .xsession .xinit script, lols.
I think I may be able to find some good scripts around here....
Openbox and dwm seem to work.
I do not like the inactive colors. Gonna have to fix that!
I haven't really studied dwm, but as soon as I get a working handle on it, I will scrot. Hopefully spectrwm isn't too far down the road, lols!

I would:
- download and install Anorexia, make a new user, log in, follow the ~/X11 text file from top to bottom.
- if you already have a X11 base, just add spectrwm as window manager. Edit ~/.xinitrc to "exec spectrwm" in the last line. No need for manual tweaking of xsession (this file is dead anyway). Run "dkeger" once in X/spectrwm. Copy the /etc/spectrwm.conf to ~/.spectrwm.conf
Edit this file to your likings. For editing the keybinds... that's another story.

additional info: "PrtScr" has to be assigned to run a certain command, for example scrot, scrotnow (only in BBQ releases) or scrotscel (only in BBQ releases). Of course this depends on your window manager. In Openbox, check its rc.xml file to add this keybinding - don't fuck the XML up, tho. In Spectrwm, you would add it in ~/.spectrwm.conf - actually it's in there, you only need to change the path to the command.

^^ yeah - start from the very beginning, I hear you are already attempting the TTY challenge (I failed) although in my defence, i work with the terminal all day, so some point and click is actually relaxing.
you should be a get a better understanding of what is what

Here is dwm. I don't find the default keybindings all that hard (my excuse for not wanting to mess with that dwm make process, lols).
Does not play well with tint2, but I actually threw that down there to see what would happen- and clock :D
I think there's a way to put a clock up in the bar, but I will have to really study on that. It's working for now, and I want to keep it that way.

Thank you, Mr. Baconator! :) I was posting earlier about my old Toshiba getting long in the tooth, and I think it has finally bought the farm....any guess what hard drive my Greatest Hits was installed on?
Lols! A lot of stuff learned along the way, and I now have a fresh 1TB ($54 at Walmart) with my data files safe and sound at the backend, and plenty of room to play with up front :)
BTW, this Lenovo will only recognize two drives in the alternate boot menu. Any workaround for this?
I might shoud post this in the support thread?

^ can you elaborate?
- what is the alternate boot menu? you mean GRUB or?
- what are the drives that are recognized and not recognized? always show us the output of

Code: Select all

sudo blkid -o list
sudo fdisk -l
- have you checked BIOS? if a drive is generally not recognized it might be deactivated there

It is the option selection menu that you get when you select the blue "Thinkvantage" button and then click F12 to pick the drive to boot from. As I only have the hdd and the two usb hdd's now, it works. But when I had three usb drives it would ignore whichever drive was in the third usb port. I tested that with all three drives in that third usb port with the same result.
Once the operating system starts- and even at the grub menu- all three drives would be recognized, so I'm guessing it was something in the BIOS.
Of course, I don't have three usb drives to test that theory atm, so no worries! :)

Getting a little tired of openbox? I'm actually getting a little fond of it (sorry dkeg).
Earlier post: my old Toshiba started clicking and hanging, then finally bit it.
So this new Seagate drive, and the quickest fix (for me) back to an X system was openbox off Greatest Hits.
Besides, there are a few things that I have not yet figured out.
Autostart is one of them. I have searched the net for the proper way to:

Code: Select all

#tint2

Code: Select all

 tint2 &

Code: Select all

#volumeicon

Code: Select all

 volumeicon &
I tried testing the commands on a terminal- they worked- so I'm afraid my hard-headedness will not allow me to continue until I get it right, lols.
It will be soon. I promise!
I also loaded the framebuffer with some goodies I've yet to try, so another promise: The next scrot will be of the framebuffer- scout's honor!

quick explanation:

- if you want something *only* autostart for openbox, you put it into ~/.config/openbox/autostart (only), for example tint2 doesn't make sense in spectrwm or dwm, so ... put it into openbox's autostart only, together with volumeicon, that needs tint2 or any other real panel. Be sure to use sleep commands, as in:

Code: Select all

sleep 2s && tint2 &
sleep 5s && volumeicon &
to give both apps time for the WM to initialize the session.
- if you want something autostart everywhere, you put it into ~/.xinitrc (only)

Thanks, machinebacon! The article I read said I needed to put everything but the trailing "&" in parenthesis. Is that correct?
example:

Code: Select all

(sleep 5s && tint2) &
for some reason that hasn't worked. I did log out and back in.
The only other thing I haven't tried is the "sh" prefix- but I don't really think it's an sh thing instead of bash.
Of course, thinking does get me into a lot of trouble! :D

no, just do it like I wrote it.

the .config/openbox/autostart file is the same like the .config/openbox/autostart.sh file. it should be executable (chmod a+x ~/.config/openbox/autostart*)
Of course you need to start openbox as session in ~/.xinitrc, so not "exec openbox" but "exec openbox-session"

Guess you slowly notice why Openbox gets a bit of bashing at the BBQ

Look up what &, &&, and parentheses around statements really do. It is useful to understand these things.
