Sounds good. Better than fixing it :)

I recommend to install one program at a time and then try it first in the terminal by simply issuing the command. If it works, pick the next one. Reason: sometimes, when there are transitions, some dependencies might not be resolved, and then removed (APT always tries to get dependencies right, even if shit is removed through installation or upgrade).

Btw you do not need to make a scrot if you want to show your .xinitrc. Just paste it here from your terminal.

Yes, read before upgrading. I think that is the bit that newcomers to sid never realize. If you do it, I assure you you will survive all the upgrades to 99.9 %. The 0.1 % is just to sound more like marketing some condoms. Shit goes down only if you are the first getting hit by a serious bug, not very probable.

Ok. Violator reinstalled. I added links2, but this one does not display images. The only suggested package I didn't install was librsvg2-bin, because I saw what looked like a whole desktop in the dependencies. Also to be installed was a network manager, a desktop schema, icon themes, etc.
Why would I need all that to display inline images?? It is a little weird not being able to see any images, though.I am going to do the volumeicon and reboot, I will try to copy/paste the ~/.xinitrc after that,If not, I will scrot..

The package name is volumeicon-alsa, but the executable is called "volumeicon &", so change the line from "volumeicon-alsa &" to "volumeicon &" and you can also remove the previous line that would start emacspeak for the blind ;)

Oh and just FYI
noo_b_nomnoms wrote:I added links2, but this one does not display images.
Start it with "xlinks2". links2 has a pure text mode and a graphical mode ("links2 -g" which is linked to "xlinks2").

I don't see a dependency on network-manager (check for yourself with "depends links2"), it only recommends a terminal emulator.

Another BTW, if you want text mode with inline images, then it would be the packages "w3m w3m-img". But I don't think you really want that one.

another fyi: no need to restart your computer after editing .xinitrc - it is the init of the X window system, in other words, you can logout, get back to your TTY, then log back in. just restart X, not your whole computer.

@Jules: yeah, those commandline switches for MOC are great. then next step is put them into a custom dmenu. but seeing the trouble our resident noob is in, we should probably leave that out for now :D

yeah, to put it another way, you can't expect to put a Kenworth engine straight into a Renault, then add a the drivetrain from a Subaru...
Not without a LOT of work and looking at manuals.

But you have the right approach. Start a bit smaller perhaps, one thing at a time?

Thanks for the help! Will fix the volumeicon & and will check out xlinks2.
^ You got that right! I am getting a little overwhelmed, but this is still pretty neat stuff! But first, that volume icon- getting a little tired of pulling up alsamixer,lols (actually I just keep it right under moc for quick adjustments,hehe)

Sorry :( I had to scrot. I also had to use geany because I couldn't figure out how to make nano copy/paste (I know, man pages- I will read tonight).

I still don't see a volume icon. I know I gotta be doing something wrong. I learned to not add two &&'s, lols. I had to hard boot the computer and login as root to fix that one :))

The xlinks2 worked great- until I tried to upload the scrot. I clicked on the upload file, an ok popped up at the bottom, but no way to go to my files and select.
I did use nano to edit .xinitrc :)

^ just use

Code: Select all

amixer -c $HW Master set X%+ # or X%-
or this code (taken from z3bra's git)

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
# z3bra - (c) wtfpl 2014

CHANNEL=$(amixer | sed "1s/^.*'\(.*\)'.*$/\1/p;d")

usage () {
    cat <<EOF
usage: $(basename $0) [-hsla] [-+!]
    -h : print help
    -s : print on/off
    -l : print the current volume percentage (default)
    -a : print both level and state
     + : volume +5%
     - : volume -5%
     ! : toggle mute
EOF
}

level() {
    amixer  get $CHANNEL | sed -n 's/^.*\[\([0-9]\+\)%.*$/\1/p' | uniq
}

state() {
    amixer  get $CHANNEL | sed -n 's/^.*\[\(o[nf]\+\)]$/\1/p' | uniq
}

# print out level and state if no argument is given
test $# -eq 0 && echo "`level`" && exit 0

case $1 in
    -h)        usage ;;
    -s)        state ;;
    -l)        level ;;
     up|+)     amixer set $CHANNEL 5%+ >/dev/null;;
     down|-)   amixer set $CHANNEL 5%- >/dev/null;;
     toggle|!) amixer set $CHANNEL toggle >/dev/null;;
     *)        amixer set $CHANNEL $1 >/dev/null;;
esac
Put the above script somewhere in your $PATH (/usr/local/bin for example). Whenever you want to set/view/mute/unmute the volume just type that command.

short stupid question: volumeicon is actually installed? in dmenu (press Mod-d to open it) or in a terminal start it with:

volumeicon

and see if it pops up in the bar. If it's not installed:

ins volumeicon-alsa

# Start i3bar to display a workspace bar (plus the system information i3status
#finds out if available)
bar(
status_command i3status
tray_output primary
)

This is what I have- I had to just write it out because I keep forgetting how to copy/paste with nano, lols.
Does the script look right? I don't think I ever mucked with it.

Dude, If you can highlight it, y'know - click and drag your mouse over it - it's in your copy buffer already!
Hit middle mouse or both laptop buttons and it should paste. Linux style baby.

it can get a bit complex though with the X windows copy buffer too.
yes the config looks right. so just run it like bacon said and see if it has a problem.
