It's not giving any output.

Re: noo_b_nomnoms- scrots
That's really interesting. It means that it is loaded and running but not displayed in the statusbar -- I have to pass this one, seems to be an i3-specific issue, and tbh I rarely use i3. If you open "alsamixer" in a terminal, you can adjust the volume levels, right?

oh, yeah! That has been my goto setup. Alt-v mocp top alsamixer bottom. It works well :) I was more or less just interested in seeing an icon down there amongst all that text :)

Re: noo_b_nomnoms- scrots
I really don't understand it, it should be there in the right lower corner, right of the clock, like for example here: http://www.linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.p ... 054#p38054
Well, wait until one of the i3-cracks chime in... I'm seriously confused...

Just a thought, never used that bar or I3 either, but it looks like an awful lot of things/text going on there.
Maybe there simply is not enough space for the volume? There must be a character limit somehow. Maybe comment out or remove some of the things you do not need, and see if the volume icon suddenly pops up?

Look at my bar compared to Kitty Nova's, though. I may not have enough real estate at the bottom of the screen after all the system info, so the systray is getting squeezed out? I hate statements that turn into questions, lols :))
But, you have to admit there's a lot of system info wown there.
^And great minds think alike :) ^

Would there be a way to comment out the Ethernet and IPv6 and maybe the DHCP indicator without messing up the wireless info?

@font size: Good idea, set the font a tiny bit smaller (edit ~/.i3/config and change the Pango font size to something around 8, or if you use xft fonts, set it to 9 or so)
@ethernet and stuff: edit ~/.i3status.conf and put a # in front of the item you dont want (on top of the file), example
I just installed i3 on the quick and volumeicon actually does work, so it's a config thingy...

Code: Select all
#order += "ipv6"
order += "disk /"
#order += "run_watch DHCP"
#order += "run_watch VPN"
#order += "wireless _first_"
#order += "ethernet _first_"
#order += "battery 0"
order += "load"
order += "tztime local"

Dude! That looks so cool! My next thing to figure out is how to get that whol e purple rain color theme going on here! With the background! I tried xsetroot with no results for the background. But let me just try to get that icon!

sidebar:
xsetroot can only set a color or a pattern, but if you want a real wallpaper (a photo, full-screen), you would use something like:
in your ~/.xinitrc and comment (put # in front of) the xsetroot line. Check your .xinitrc, there should be something already ;)

Re: noo_b_nomnoms- scrots
It appears I never had a ~/.i3status.conf.
Could this be a problem? Maybe I should have copied one to my home directory?

^ shouldn't be a problem to fix it:
After this, edit the ~/.i3status.conf file, and restart i3.
Code: Select all
cp /etc/i3status.conf ~/.i3status.conf

Aye, Captain! Consider it done!
We have changed the i3bar, but still no volumeicon. I tried reloading it from the commandline. Let me try a reboot.

still no volumeicon after complete reboot. I will nano the ~/.config/i3/config file and just make sure nothing is down around the i3bar lines that shouldn't be there.

I think the ~/.xinitrc looks pretty clean. It doesn't look like there is anything there that would make it ignore?

Just to make sure:
the path for i3's configuration is:
~/.i3/config
and the statusbar is
~/.i3status.conf
In your ~/.xinitrc remove the line:
sleep 3s && exec x-terminal-emulator -geometry 85x30 -e emacspeak -nw &

Re: noo_b_nomnoms- scrots
Ahummmm! So you are now using the VGA-1 ...
So let's edit ~/.i3/config - down at the bottom you find the bar section (no beer there):
This will now put the bar on both screens. Probably it makes the icon appear now on the external monitor, too.
So let's edit ~/.i3/config - down at the bottom you find the bar section (no beer there):
Code: Select all
bar {
output VGA-1
status_command i3status
}
bar {
output LVDS-1
status_command i3status
}
