kex, what if you send to STDOUT instead to lemonbar, and then make some workspace change - is this updated instantly?

^ Yes, then it works. It also works with dzen, but the numbers it shows are wrong (it's supposed to go 0-1-2-3, but it shows 3-0-1-2).

Strange, tried your code and assigned it to a keybind. I'm in spectrwm and it counts from 0. Must be something about your WM then, maybe.
