[SOLVED] fgrlx install

[SOLVED] fgrlx install

Unread post by elixir » Tue Feb 25, 2014 6:55 pm

The past 3 times I have tried installing the correct fgrlx packages I have messed up my system. So this time I am going to ask if anyone of you know how to do it correctly! I reinstalled my system so right now I have a fresh LinuxBBQ so I am hoping that makes things easier. Here is my info on my BBQ and my GFX.

My Kernel and such:

GFX Card Info (AMD HD Radeon 6700 Series)
Image

Package I attempted to install last time:
https://packages.debian.org/sid/fglrx-driver

I might of installed the right thing, I really do not know because I forgot how to configure it also.
And the gfx card driver is mainly going to be for playing Steam games.

Thank you and if you need any more info just post what you need!

PS: Last install when I tried I could not get steam to open, and two times before that I got steam to open but games would not open.
The weird thing about this time is that steam, and the game (CS:S) open but it is all laggy and I think it is because of this driver.

My advice would be to use sgfxi (that's what I use too and it's a painless way to do it):

Run

Code: Select all

cd /usr/local/bin && wget -Nc smxi.org/sgfxi && chmod +x sgfxi
as root to install it, and then log in with sudo su - in a tty, and run sgfxi, follow instructions.

^ sgfxi is included in BBQ spin, so no need to install it again and have it twice on the drive.

But yes, that might be the easiest way. Press Ctrl-Alt-F3, then run "sudo sgfxi"

Opening and running sgfxi works. But when I run it I get an error message after it says "hit enter to install fgrlx driver"

Code: Select all

ERROR: (226) The driver you selected: 13:12 does not support your current Xorg version: 1.15. If this is wrong, please let the script maintainer know.
You can override this test with -! 6 option. If install works, let maintainer know.

Log file is located here: /var/log/sgfxi/sgfxi.log

Exiting script now.
Would the next step be to update my Xorg version?

:) No, you already run the newest version (we are the bleeding edge of Debian) *Actually* you would need an older kernel pre 3.3 (as stupid as it sounds)

Is it *really* necessary to run the fglrx blob? I am just asking because ... I haven't used these blob drivers for several years now, and don't miss anything about them. You have support for ATI right OOTB.

That is super weird. I guess I really do not need it, and this will make me stop playing video games and focus on code and such which will be more productive in my opinion! So sick.

And I noticed every time I tried to get the driver on here my windows started lagging with switching to full screen and default tile mode and would scroll slow. So I guess it is better off if I do not have it. Thank you for your help though kexolino and bacon!

Additional info, and this should ring the alarm bells:
towo wrote:The amd-run-installer is breaking every deb based system.
Especialy if multiarch is needed, have fun with this shit.
And btw, fglrx 12.10 is in sid, so no need to break things.
This comes from the guy who spins the siduction kernels, so I take whatever he says about 'breaking' seriously.

That would explain why I have had to reinstall the bbq about 4 times now in attempts to getting it. Staying away from that now lol

If temperature is an issue (just in case), there is the possibility of manipulating the CPU governor. Posting this for completeness:

Code: Select all

cpufreq-info|grep decide
shows the governor in use.

I would recommend to set it like this:

Code: Select all

sudo cpufreq-set -g ondemand
If you want performance:

Code: Select all

sudo cpufreq-set -g performance
Same for powersaving:

Code: Select all

sudo cpufreq-set -g powersave
Of course read the manpage :)
