Problems with download (Saltimbocca) i686

Unread post by randiroo76073 » Sat Dec 22, 2012 1:11 am

I've downloaded the ISO file 4 different times with 4 different downloaders, each time the download completed with a file size of 415.2 mb and a md5 of 4fd27a596e026c5bc262f762714716bb . I can't get any of them to initialize beyond a blank screen...
I even tried a usb drive to see if that would work. Any ideas ?

I know this doesn't match the md5 posted, and yes I'm sure my readers(2) work.

How about using terminal to grab the iso?

"wget -c url.to/the/iso.iso"

root@linuxbbqxfce:/home/wayne# wget -c http://linuxbbq.org/releases/Base32/lin ... ase486.iso

the download-method suggested by wayne is indeed the best way to download it. browsers often have download-managers built in that don't properly cap the speed, which some servers don't enjoy, causing broken downloads. other than that, you could wait for somebody to brew you a torrent :)

Hello,
a few questions:
From what kind of medium do you boot?
How did you move the file to the medium?
If you burned the medium, did you use a speed of 4x (if possible)?
Does the computer support the 686 instruction set (just to rule out that it's an old 386)?
Where does the black screen occur?
If you can see the boot screen with the boot options, have you tried all of them?
If you can see the boot screen, press Tab and change the entry 'verbose' to 'quiet.' by manual editing.

yes wget is best as said and also I have had similar issues but noticed that I was making a simple mistake or it was just the program method.
is it being flagged bootable, i use usb flash mostly 9 out of 10 tries always work by making bootable and having the format as fat. if you use unetbootin of course it needs to be mounted but if you are not aware of using dd, this is also a great method but some iso's do not even work properly with this. so just try each way. dd needs to be used without your usb flash being mounted and should look like this dd if=/path/file.iso of=/dev/sdf bs=1M (of course be careful when using this and KNOW what you medium device code is so it may be /dev/sdc or another (just open disk-utility or use gparted to do this as well) (best way i do this to not worry about getting file name right also is open up the file manager window and then click tools bar in top and "open current folder in terminal" or hit F4.)

i have also used downloadthemall addon in firefox though with no issues and it pauses the download fine. but yeah like said torrents are the best to use if one is found.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try to answer some of the questions: I should have put this down originally, running Mint Mate 14(nadia), homebrewed box, AMD Athlon X2-5600, 6gigs ddr2-800.
1. I boot from cdr-rw, dvd+/-r-rw, usb stick, sd flash card, external hdd, on top of my internal hdds(no raid)
2. I always burn at slowest speed. K3b or XFburn for burners, was using Brasero but lately it's not been reliable.
3. I use usb image writer or unetbootin for sticks and cards.
4. Black screen occurs before I get to boot menu...all I get is a screen with blinking cursor, no errors, no nothing, hitting enter doesn't do anything.
5. Downloaders I have used: Chrome/Chormium built-in, Uget, Multiget, Fatrat. Have not used wget yet.
Been running Linux for 10 yrs, but had a Brain-fart and screwed up my memory so I have to ask questions again 8-(

PS: can anyone give me the current file size and md5 hash of Saltimbocca i686, i read elsewhere in the forum that they were having probs with them showing up properly.

@randiroo: try this method for download of Saltimbocca:

Code: Select all

wget -c http://linuxbbq.org/releases/Base32/linuxbbq-base686.iso
then plug in your USB, do a 'blkid -o list' to determine where it is placed in the /dev tree (we'll use /dev/sdb as an example here).
navigate to the directory you downloaded the .iso in. now do

Code: Select all

dd if=linuxbbq-base686.iso of=/dev/sdb;sync
reboot. it *should* now give you the boot-screen (assuming your PC is set to boot from USB).

this is the method i always use, and, provided the download was correct, it should give you no issues.

check here for the .md5 file and the filesize on the server: http://linuxbbq.org/releases/Base32/

Randiroo,

the checksum is 4fd27a596e026c5bc262f762714716bb linuxbbq-base686.iso

When the md5sum doesn't seem to be the problem, can you try to copy the file to a USB stick by using the dd command? If you need assistance on this, please let us know. In our experience, booting from a USB stick that was "dd"'ed works best. But really, be sure to ask first if you are unsure, because this method requires more attention than using a user interface.

Another last thing that springs to mind is the boot order of your computer - is it actually trying to boot from the inserted media?

Alternatively, you might want to try Trollinger (which is basically the same like Saltimbocca, just that it has a login manager and LXDE as desktop) It's pretty light and just a few days old. In fact, I am using in right now.

Code: Select all

wget -c http://linuxbbq.org/releases/LXDE/linuxbbq-trollinger.iso
md5sum: b6db2c4ab06f39d075cdd23a4230b599 linuxbbq-trollinger.iso

We are happy to help you joining the collective barbecue :)

Oh no-es, Making the usb stick worked great...except no wifi. Mine is a usb wifi adapter and it doesn't initialize at all, even before I go to gui, so wicd naturally tells me there is none.

Please post the output of the "lsusb" command.

@randiroo: go to wicd > preferences > set wlan0 as your wifi adapter.

if that don't work, do what pidsley says. but this is the simplest explanation of your issue.

Try with this:

1) Open a terminal and change to root

Code: Select all

su -
(enter your password which will not be echoed)

2)

Code: Select all

modprobe -r r8712u
modprobe r8712u
3) optionally start the network configuration utility Ceni

Code: Select all

ceni
pick the card, remove the configuration and reconfigure again (use Tab to jump between the fields, Enter to select]

Downloaded Saltimbocca i686 non-PAE.

md5sum is 4fd27a596e026c5bc262f762714716bb as reported by the OP, but the sum on the download page is 64237e45669b8556add04a0e5f5c2db2.

Will dd to USB soon.

Created bootable USB with dd and it worked fine; the listed md5sum must be incorrect.

Why was the non-PAE 686 kernel selected as the default for this release? For greater compatability? Is that necessary if there is also a 486 version availalble?

Because the 486 version is a different kernel.

Code: Select all

3.2.0-4-486
Vanilla Debian. Compatibility only.

Ok. So the 486 version is for older hardware and the 686 for newer hardware. If I have more than 4GB of RAM, I should install the PAE kernel. So for a netbook with 1GB RAM, I should just use the 686 non-PAE kernel?

Correct. 3GB RAM and more can make use of PAE (provided it is supported by the hardware, but it usually is). Everything below 3GB won't bring a boost.

The 486 should work for all PCs but it won't receive as many fresh kernel upgrades as the 686 (which is working well for most computers that are newer than 12 years old, IIRC the Celeron is the last CPU to work with it, but I may be wrong).

tl;dr: For a computer with 1GB RAM (or also 2GB) the recommended version is the 686 "as it comes" from the BBQ grill :)

But 486 is not recommended for dual- or quad-core machines.
