Installing iceweasel aurora

Unread post by kelean » Sun Jan 06, 2013 10:42 pm

Hi all I am really loving the BBQ. I am running Saltimbocca. I have installed chromium and like it for the most part but I would like to run iceweasel. I was going to install it but the bug warnings stopped me. I have not run a sid based system before and am being very cautious.

I did some looking around and decided to install the Aurora version. I removed the commented line for the expermental iceweasel aurora repo. I then did a apt-get update and now I have a gpg error.

Code: Select all

W: GPG error: http://mozilla.debian.net experimental Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 85A3D26506C4AE2A
W: Failed to fetch http://http.debian.net/debian/dists/unstable/main/i18n/Translation-enIndex MD5Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I am sure I missed something simple, thanks Kelean.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pkg-mozilla-archive-keyring
http://mozilla.debian.net/

Remember to sudo apt-get update again after this.

Thanks that solved the gpg error but I am still getting errors.

Code: Select all

Failed to fetch http://http.debian.net/debian/dists/unstable/main/source/SourcesIndex MD5Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch http://http.debian.net/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/PackagesIndex MD5Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch http://http.debian.net/debian/dists/unstable/non-free/binary-i386/PackagesIndex MD5Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Do I need to add the
http://mozilla.debian.net/

link to my sources list. It is there but commented out.

Ok I reran apt-get update a couple of times and the errors are gone. Must have been a repo or my wireless problem.

I have still not been able to install iceweasel. I tried iceweasel-aurora and it says unable to locate. I will do some more investagating.

Thank Kelean.

fwiw, installing Iceweasel here gave no issues whatsoever (simple 'sudo apt-get install iceweasel'). not sure about warnings, i just installed and am using happily :)

Maybe you forgot to do as bacon suggested and run apt-get update again before trying to install iceweasel?

I have iceweasel installed and running fine now. One of the problems was that when I ran sudo apt-get update I had several failures. I must have had a problem with my wireless because after a couple different attemps update finished with no errors and I was able to install iceweasel with no problems.

Thanks for the help everyone, Kelean.

Those 'hash sum mismatches' happen more often since debian has been using their automatic mirror-selecting tool (choosing the closest mirror to ones GEO IP location), so it's their fault alone :)

I am using iceweasel for last few weeks and upon installation is does identify 3 unfixed bugs. Like rho I have been using it without problems. This is on my production machine. I don't think they're 'grave bugs' just your run of the mill vague 'serious bugs'. My only worries initially using it for work were that they might screw things up because I use google drive for writing at the moment. I doubt they would present any other risks to your computer really. BBQ is more stable than ubuntu, mint and #!- I have had no freezes or anything at all.
...oh.

@Dura: As I said in my original post I do not have much experience running sid. So the unfixed bug worries me a bit.. I installed iceweasel and it is running very well.

@machinebacon: I do realize those 'hash sum mismatches' are debians fault. But I have had a few problems with my wifi. It drops out sometimes and when I try to reconnect it will not connect because of a bad password. The BBQ is one of the first distro's that I can use my pro-wireless 2200 card.

Thanks Kelean.

Regarding the Debian mirrors and the md5 hashes:
- noob question: in Arch you use a sort of ping procedure to find the fastest mirrors, and then set then in the list. Debian works differently?
- do they put different versions, with different md5s on each miror? Really?

Thanks in advance, learning every day.

Btw, how is stability compared to that blue distro? If its comparable that's fine with me.

Not just in Arch - you probably mean the reflector there, and there are similar ways in Debian.

Three ways of getting the fastest mirror:
- rely on http.debian.net (default for BBQ because I assume people from different territories use it)
- use the mirrorlist and put in instead of debian.net into the sources list (as seen at http://www.debian.org/mirror/list)
- use netselect-apt

Hash problems: http://debian.2.n7.nabble.com/Hashsum-m ... 25370.html

Never got issues with system stability in Debian (nor Arch, nor Slack derivatives), so I'm the wrong one to answer it.

If you mean the stability of the repos, the unstable one is updated 4 times a day, so there is a high fluctuation at times.
