Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

[SOLVED] Disabling screen blanking

Unread post by kexolino » Fri Aug 01, 2014 8:33 am

I have set these commands to run on login:

Code: Select all

xset -dpms
xset s noblank
xset s off
and there's Option "NODPMS" in the monitor section of xorg.conf. Still my screen blanks, and then keeps turning on and off. I don't have any kind of screensaver app installed. Checked the nvidia-settings, but there's nothing about blanking in there.

Output of xset q:

Code: Select all

Keyboard Control:
auto repeat: on key click percent: 0 LED mask: 00000002
  XKB indicators:
00: Caps Lock: off 01: Num Lock: on 02: Scroll Lock: off
03: Compose: off 04: Kana: off 05: Sleep: off
06: Suspend: off 07: Mute: off 08: Misc: off
09: Mail: off 10: Charging: off 11: Shift Lock: off
12: Group 2: off 13: Mouse Keys: off
auto repeat delay: 500 repeat rate: 30
  auto repeating keys: 00ffffffdffffbbf
                        fadfffefffedffff
                        9fffffffffffffff
                        fff7ffffffffffff
bell percent: 50 bell pitch: 400 bell duration: 100
Pointer Control:
  acceleration: 2/1 threshold: 4
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: no allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 0 cycle: 600
Colors:
  default colormap: 0x20 BlackPixel: 0x0 WhitePixel: 0xffffff
Font Path:
  /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi,/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi,built-ins,/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi,/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi,built-ins
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 600 Suspend: 600 Off: 600
  DPMS is Disabled
Is there anything else I could do to kill off blanking? It gets really annoying when watching long videos online.

I'll try it out when I get home, thanks. Should I remove the "NODPMS" option then?

Allright, that worked. I removed the "NODPMS" option, dunno if it was necessary or not.

Thank you wuxmedia for ALL of your help...I apologies if I might of given the impression that I ignored Sir Bacon's suggestion...but I am fairly new to dwm and also I am definitely not as experienced as most of you here at the grill (for now!) but when I grow up I want to be like you grillers...thats for sure. Feeling more comfortable with the ~/.bashrc file I followed your advice and I am very HAPPY that I did.

^ Stealing another man's words and passing them off as your own is tantamount to err, dunno. Not nice though.
Not only that but it's off topic.
If you can't at least quote what you've ripped off, you're on ze list..
