Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

Re: sound card problems
Only one kind of onboard soundcard is known to need external drivers which are already packed in BBQ.
Open a terminal, enter:
If it shows "Maestro" or "ESS" skip to Option 2.
Option 1)
Choose "Reset and test soundcard" and press Enter
Wait a moment, then a mixer opens
Press Cursor Up and Down to regulate the sound, choose channels with Cursor Left and Right
Press Esc when you finished
Option 2)
If you use a Maestro/ESS card (lspci --nnk|grep Audio) you need to choose "Fix Maestro/ESS soundcards" in the menu. After this, go through Option 1)
Open a terminal, enter:
Code: Select all
lspci --nnk|grep Audio
Code: Select all
bbqfix
Choose "Reset and test soundcard" and press Enter
Wait a moment, then a mixer opens
Press Cursor Up and Down to regulate the sound, choose channels with Cursor Left and Right
Press Esc when you finished
Option 2)
If you use a Maestro/ESS card (lspci --nnk|grep Audio) you need to choose "Fix Maestro/ESS soundcards" in the menu. After this, go through Option 1)

Re: sound card problems
In Proof you add a volume icon to the panel by right-clicking on the panel and adding the mixer.
Code: Select all
ins xfce4-mixer

Re: sound card problems
at any rate, you can just open a terminal and type 'alsamixer'. plus do what other people said already :)
All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.

Re: sound card problems
The humming you hear comes from your microphone and/or mic boost.
Check post #2, we can't guess what your sound card is.
