[fuckit] ATI Radeon HD2400 card with newer kernels/xorg?

To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

[fuckit] ATI Radeon HD2400 card with newer kernels/xorg?

Unread post by rhowaldt » Tue Mar 03, 2015 9:04 pm

as the title says. smxi tells me the hd2xx cards are no longer supported and i should buy nvidia (which i will surely do, at some point). i tried installing both the "native" drivers and the radeon drivers, and in both cases got semi-randomly garbled graphics in Chromium (most notably black blocks. i also think just now my entire screen failed when doing urxvt slow fucking refreshes). i didnt used to have those after i first installed Bork, but after these changes i do. i also noticed some modprobe-related errors during boot, but cant seem to retrieve them using dmesg.

Code: Select all

[21:03:21]$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV610/M72-S [Mobility Radeon HD 2400]
hope this is of any damn use. should i maybe use an older kernel/xorg? and if so, does that mean i will not be able to upgrade anymore? and if so, does that mean i just ran into the big issue of hardware becoming outdated?

Re: ATI Radeon HD2400 card not working with newer kernels/xo

I've had some hassle with ancient radeon cards. In an ancient machine. with an old kernel.
Isn't there a legacy package? I fucked about with it for a while and gave up.
didn't help much - sorry.

Can you install the linux-image-586/-686 (and also the modules) kernel and boot up with that? That's Debian's vanilla kernel and it is behind a few revisions.

Also, in a terminal use 'search radeonhd' and you'll see some packages (fglrx), you might try with these. Finally, check pidsley's 'get-kernel' and try with an old kernel, something like 3.6.x will teleport you back to 2013 or so :)

Good luck, I gave up on everything non-Intel.

thanks, will have a look at those.

edit: suddenly realized that if it first worked on a clean Bork install, maybe i should just go back to that. i meddled with a lot of stuff and am not really sure what exactly anymore, and all of a sudden shit didnt work properly anymore. so i will do that, because fuck it. apparently Jules grilled up a release that fits my system perfectly from the start, so why would i season it until it tastes bad? thanks for making Bork Jules, i really like it :)
