To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

[SHRUGZ] Hardware: VGA stays black (not even 'No Signal')

Unread post by machinebacon » Wed May 13, 2015 8:25 am

A question to all hardware gurus:

I have a desktop PC (custom built) and an LCD screen, connected on VGA. Everything worked flawlessly over months. Yesterday I shut down the computer, upon rebooting the screen stays black. No CMOS, no POST, no beeps. Hard drive boots up normally, login via SSH is possible. Plugged the screen into the laptop, works normally. I changed the motherboard, hooked up everything again, same symptoms, black screen. I changed to yet another motherboard, same symptoms, black screen. Connected the RaspberryPi using a HDMI/VGA adapter, screen works. Any idea what the problem could be? I just guess: it can only be the PSU.

All of the tested motherboards have an on-board VGA chip, and with all of these motherboards I flushed the BIOS (BAT1 jumper bridged to 2-3, flush the battery), so it can not be that PCI-E is chosen automatically upon boot.

Thanks in advance.

Little update: wasn't the PSU. Wasn't the power button or the reset switch. Will try with another CPU (have to get a cheap second-hand one just for kicks, price is around 3 USD online). So, closing this, thanks for the help guys (lol)
