linuxbbq with linux-image-4.0.0-1-686-pae?

Unread post by vim » Sat May 16, 2015 8:18 am

Hi,

i use only LinuxBBQ on live-usbs and it works great. I reroeast it from usb to hdd-iso-file and the dd to to usb again.

My Openbox version based on "chicken wings":

Code: Select all

Linux grill 3.16.0-4-586 #1 Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-3 (2015-04-23) i686 GNU/Linux
It was no problem to reroast it from Sysvinit to Systemd (change core-packages).

But now i want to dist-upgrade and change to the kernel 4 e.g. "linux-image-4.0.0-1-686-pae "
The dist-upgrade works but the ISO do no not boot.

Is there perhaps a linuxbbq-version with the modern kernel 4 from Debian Sid?

No.

You need to compile a kernel with aufs support (or find one precompiled one that has aufs) if you are using anything newer than 3.18 and want to use aufs, which is dropped and replaced with overlayfs.

https://lists.debian.org/debian-live/20 ... 00041.html
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=773881

Debian apparently does not support aufs anymore in their vanilla kernel >3.18, siduction (IIRC) neither, aptosid anyway not, Liquorix does.

The question is ... why do you feel as though you need the 4.0 kernel? Does it contain something specific you need? It actually looks like it fucks you. Stay with what works. This is exactly how users break their shit, and then complain.

FWIW, I am running Victory, and was just upgraded from 3.16 something 4.0

Code: Select all

Linux Victory 4.0.0-1-586 #1 Debian 4.0.2-1 (2015-05-11) i686 GNU/Linux
not pae, but you can see the upgrade did recently come through. I don't notice anything. Don't feel I need it. Iwould not have upgraded if it had not come though automatically.

read through the kernel changenotes. is there anything in there that you remotely understand? if so, consider whether it has any relevance to your life. if not, you just want the new kernel because it is new. which is fine, but we're just saying it's not worth the trouble. basically, if you fuck it up you're on your own.

I do not really need the 4.0 kernel. It is all just for fun. Linux is just for fun.

Ok another question:

if aufs is replaced with overlayfs : what about new linuxbbq-versions in future? When can i get linuxbbq-versions with overlayfs support?

You can get these versions when (and if) we feel like making them. Or you can make them yourself, and give something back. Seriously dude, stop demanding things. I realize this may be a language issue (English not being your first) but you sound like a whiny brat -- "why no vi? why my 4.0 kernel no boot? when i can haz overlayfs support?"

We gave you a second chance, but you are getting close to a permanent ban.

There is no point in kernel 4.0 if you have an "older" machine, i.e. you need PAE because you have a lot of RAM? Which processor are you using etc. and the list goes on. But I have to say, for a big new nice machine yes then, 4.0 works nicely because many "updates" in it are for NEW machines ;)

cheers

PS. Sorry guys, but seriously this is the first time I have seen so much negativity in one new thread! Why? OP has bad english or am I missing something, this is not the normal welcome I have experienced here...
Rho, really? "consider whether it has any relevance to your life" nice welcome, and extremely harsh if OP has a different cultural background!..

@uname
Just to clarify: the new kernel versions *do* have overlayfs support, but no aufs support anymore (upstream). Probably then your question would be: how to boot with overlayfs instead of aufs?

@dkeg
thanks, was about to write one, too.

Ok my mistake. I do not really need PAE and do not need kernel 4. My best computer is a IBM/Lenovo T60 and he can use PAE. Normally i run under LinuxBBQ only Openbox and Iceweasel. Perhaps 300 MB RAM ;-) And yes, i do not now the features of kernel 4. But why not testing if possible?

You should tinker around with it; testing it yourself is the quickest way to learn. I have a T410 with an i3 processor and 4GB of memory and I don't usually use the PAE kernel - if I add another 4GB to my memory I would probably play with it :)
