Holy chunky smbclient batman!

Unread post by nassausky » Sat Jun 06, 2015 2:08 am

Hello fello bbq superheros...

I can't believe that smbclient is 51 meg. Is there any way to install smbclient without such an overhead?

Now you might ask what I need. Just enough to boot up BBQ academy and have a very slim filemanager open up a remote samba folder with movies on it and have them play in a small video viewer.

Any way to make it as tiny as possible? At least for now getting a filemanager to recognize the smb network share and connect to it.

Love to hear some ideas.

Ok found it using

apt-get install cifs-utils
and using
mount.cifs //myserverip/video /mylocalfolder -o user=mysmbuser,pass=mysmbpassword

Now looking for the smallest video client :)

Cool!
Now, I have to ask... how big is your install?

The smallest video player client I could find with supposedly an OK selection of codecs is MPV, I have been a fan of VLC but it's much larger so going to test out MPC.
I am also using XFE because it's not that much bigger than Midnight Commander. I tried XFM but it's clunky as far as getting in and out of directories and looks like opening a movie in XFM I have to drag it over to the app panel.

So
Bare minumum install
Academy + cifs-utils + xfe + mpv + ftp = 287 Meg ISO file

Thanks! Getting late going to get some sleep. Can't wait to test it on my old machine.

The Mplayer on this page I use for really old machines it is a statically linked version and runs from /opt and no samba required if memory serves. Designed for PII era machines.
