Nope. no systemd. I'm running Bork.

Code: Select all

paco@grill:~$ policy systemd
systemd:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 227-2
  Version table:
     227-2 0
        500 http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
You can definitely always go to TTY2 and let xserver loop in TTY1 until it stops respawning for 5 minutes.
yes, I can go tty2, but the nvidia installer complains that xserver keeps running. If I understand this right, will it stop respawning after 5 minutes? (Sorry I'm not native English spoken. Sometimes I don't get things quite right).
Secondly, edit ~/.bash_profile and comment the line that contains startx. This breaks the loop (but drops you back to TTY again)
I'm afraid it doesn't stop the loop, at least here. If login out it always relogs-in even if nothing's left into .bash_profile.

Anyway, Thanks, MB. I'll try all those things above.

Removing that zzz script did it. No more respawning. I finally can get into the ttys. Failed to install the drivers, but that's a different story.

Thanks a lot, baconator.

proof xfce login issue

Unread post by siklopz » Tue Nov 03, 2015 7:34 am

I was amazed to find Proof. I've been looking for a minimal setup, to improve my understanding of Linux systems and force myself to use more terminal-based /programs navigation. It was even better to find a minimal Linux with my favorite distro and desktop, Debian-xfce.

Unfortunately, when I attempt to login after installation, I find the prompt jumps to the next line, but nothing happens. If i type anything else, it shows up on the screen, and enter takes me to the next line...ad infinitum. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks again, for providing your Linux spins. They're excellent.

It seems you caught the xorg issue.

Bacon has a solution:

http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2295#p46811

Or just try to downgrade to the older xorg package:

Have you set up a new user after installation and reboot?

Code: Select all

After installation, reboot and log in as root, then run "setup" to create new users. If you fail to do so, remember to edit ~/.Xresources and add the include to point at ~/.Xresources_colors
I'm pretty sure it is not the xorg bug in this case (yet), as it came after the initial release.

My Bork and Break (with experimental repos)and antiX15 with Sid and eudev are all playing "hide the cursor" today after Xorg upgrades but not for the same reasons as you (I've got intel). Time to go back to yesterday's snapshots. Ha, as I'm writing this, antix15 with Jessie (Stable) just did the same thing after completing a d-upg too. Boo hoo hoo, Debian hates me today.

Interesting, I ran "apt update && apt list --upgradable" and got no X-server related shit in the list...

Can you show me your "cat /var/log/apt/history.log" and "uname -a" maybe in a new thread in the support section? Thanks in advance!

I already uninstalled but will re-install to see if I can reproduce the problem. This used to happen to me eventually with #! all the time if I ran testing or Sid with it, testing or Sid with Debian and did a dist-upgrade or some upgrade, but never with aptosid. Sometimes the cursor came back after pressing random keys, sometimes after opening the menu and right-clicking on a menu entry or sometimes not at all. Never happened to me with Arch, Gentoo, Slackware, Crux, LFS, FreeBSD, PCLOS, Fedora, Ubuntu or Linux Mint. I don't know why it's only Debian and why it never happened to my aptosid install. Aptosid might be the key and installing stuff outside of X is the ticket. Or it might just be arrogant prick user error on my part too :) I've done a clean install of BORK first am doing a dist-upgrade atm.

Desktop frozen after 01-09-16 dist-upgrade & reboot in BORK

Unread post by archvortex » Sat Jan 09, 2016 5:48 am

Experimental repos are also being used for BORK. This is from a fresh install of BORK and dist-upgrade and reboot results in frozen cursor and desktop now (alt+F2 doesn't work either).

I'm speculating that it's the xserver-xorg-video-modesetting:i386 causing the problem. Time to check bug list and STFW. I have a few plans of attack.

Re: Desktop frozen after 01-09-16 dist-upgrade & reboot in B

- Adipositas plus X plus spectrwm (any other more or less recent BBQ release will show the same symptoms)
- sysvinit as init system
- systemd not installed
- libpam-systemd not installed

Steps that lead to borkage:
- performed a dist-upgrade on Oct 22
- xserver-* versions bumped to 2:1.17.2-3
- startx brings a cursor and no further reaction -- needs rude shutdown manually (power button) or REISUB

Here comes the fix:
- either chroot into the fucked up installation or log in on a neighbouring TTY (of course you can do these steps inside of a 'held' X, too)
- install "xserver-xorg-legacy" from the repos
Code:
ins xserver-xorg-legacy

- edit /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config as root
Code:
sudo editor /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

add this line at the end
Code:
needs_root_rights=yes

save and exit.

This will probably fix 99% of the fucked up systems. The faulty package "xserver-xorg" should not be removed.

Original fix from Machinebacon.

Thanks Darry!

I remember seeing the MB fix somewhere on this forum (was it for your problem?) but couldn't remember where. I just came back from the next door neighbours as the father passed away so I can fix it now. This happens to me all the time with Debian xorg upgrades and discouraged me from using #!, Debian, siduction and antiX in the past. Never happened with aptosid. Can't remember if I didn't upgrade because of warnings before.

Fixing time now. Cheers!!

And like f'in magic it's working again, worked on a new install of Break and fixed antiX15 with sid and eudev. Thanks again Darry for the help and to Julius for the magic :) Don't know why this only happens to me in Debian and not others

The problem persists and also with antiX. If I follow the solution you provided about using xorg-legacy and Xwrapper, I lose sysvinit ability but gain my desktop back again. Also, when completing a dist-upgrade using sysvinit, Debian wants to remove my intel driver now (and upgrade all the other video drivers if I don't remove them). WTF? I have had problems with Debian (except aptosid)on this laptop as long as I have tried running Debian on it for years. Although I love a challenge at solving problems, I'm going to stop wasting time and attribute it to some part of my laptop's hardware is not compatible with running Debian testing or sid. Even Debian stable (Wheezy) had problems. LTS Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 have no problems (Linux Mint, WattOS, etc.). I reinstalled Slackware but have left a test partition to try the next BBQ release on it. BTW, BBQ releases run great and stay sysvinit on my Asus netbook which makes me incredibly happy :)

^ what do you mean 'lose sysvinit ability'? There is no systemd in use on BBQ, except if you manually install it. xorg-legacy does not pull in systemd.

if dist-upg wants to remove the intel driver simply cancel and try again in a few days. Or change the repos maybe. I use an intel gfx (on-board, i915) on several machines and none are problematic. The cursor does not disappear (I remember the problem was not with intel, but nouveau).

In BREAK! the xorg-legacy fix is already shipped.

I'll try again and document and scrot the process. I won't add any packages to the install and just upgrade. I'll start a new thread for this.

Might help if I turned off the experimental repo instead of using it. With experimental repo turned on all the shit happened but with it turned off, no xorg stuff was updated and everything is groovious maximus. I tell ya, the stuff I forget I've done since I got smacked off the motorbike by that bus. Not loving head trauma. Thanks for bearing with me and helping me figure out this crap.
