Shutdown freezing

Unread post by Snap » Fri Nov 13, 2015 11:19 am

I installed mesa-vdpau-drivers in order to get streams from mpv, otherwise it doesn't stream anything here. Since I installed it shutting down freezes forever. It goes to a blank screen as always but it never powers off the machine. The same for reboot. It doesn't do it. just freezes at the same point. Any tips about sorting this out? I have no idea where to start checking things.

Thanks.

Only thing I can think of is to check dmesg, see dmesg.1 or whatever it's called, after it comes back on.

What command/action are you doing to shutdown / restart ?

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -r now
sudo shutdown -h now
Switched to

Code: Select all

sudo /sbin/reboot
sudo /sbin/poweroff
But made no difference.

Going to check dmesg now. Thanks, wux.

just for my own satisfaction try:

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -hP now
P for power, think I had something similar. It halts, but doesn't power down.
Might work, might not.
In fact any of the .0 or .1 logs might be handy.

Could depend on the kernel, I have the same problem with Ubuntu but not with Debian vanilla. YMMV

There's one more thing you can try:

as kernel boot parameters, you can try to add

acpi=force

and probably something more special for your motherboard. Some motherboards want to have

acpi_osi=Linux acpi=force acpi_enforce_resources=lax

or even

acpi=off noacpi noapic nolapic

Try, try, try and let us know:

- your computer model
- the output of lspci -nnk
- any positive outcome

Thanks!

Thanks, bacon. I almost gave up with this. Having problems with any 4.2 and 4.3 kernels. Freezing at boot at "waiting for /dev to be fully populated" or something like that. I'm stuck with 4.1.6. Maybe I'm having an HD problem.

@wux. I'm all lost at dmesg output. Don't really know what to look for. Or maybe there's nothing related there... Perhaps this...

Code: Select all

System wakeup disabled by ACPI
But these mesages appear while checking the pcis before the kernel boot, looking for HDs, etc...

I am getting old for support questions like yours. :) But that acpi thing could be it. Maybe the LTS kernel is a solution for now. Maybe try another kernel instead of towo, Debian vanilla, Liquorix, Antix? Of course Bacon's kernel parameters sound reasonable. You have to test all options.

I'm on LTS. No way to install a newer one. Maybe it's all related with my HD issues. I think so... I guess before driving crazy I should buy a new HD and replace this sucker as a start. It never performed right after this. And weird things and behaviors are appearing more and more. Sigh...

BTW, tried the suggested boot parameters. no difference. Anyway. I give up. A new HD and a fresh install will follow.

Thanks, for the help.

Yeah, don't use smxi, it's harakiri.

I'd go into BIOS and check if there's switch for APM or ACPI. Of course installing from scratch sounds reasonable enough. And no smxi/sgfxi, promise this to me :D

Maybe a reinstall also "fixes" the HD problem. Who knows.

Really? smxi is praised everywhere! But as I've said, it never worked in any of my machines. Not even a single time. Thanks for pointing this out, baconator. I thought I was the only one in the world not like in it. LOL.

I plan to get a new HD anyway, but will try to recover this one once again. Low level formating didn't did it the first time. maybe insisting might clear the fucking MBR. I'm still having issues (and some booting complaints) with the MBR partition table and the magic number besides I'm currently forced to use GTP instead. Will report back in a few days. Not going shopping today.
