speckdrum wifi bummer {Solved}

Unread post by wuxmedia » Tue Oct 23, 2012 11:38 pm

well looking forward to something like this but, wifi not auto... ok,
tried ceni...seemed to work. no network,
tried wicp-client seemed to agree on it being connected, no network
tried i915, bad choice.

no network - as in roaster wouldn't let me go anywhere, no ping, couldn't connect to the router.
not really sure how deep to go with ceni, last time i clicked on accept eveything and worked ok

played around a bit. like the colour, 'cept it seems the colour describing memory/swap in htop is the same as the background?

wux, i had the same thing i think on first run. please try this:

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill list
if it says 'softblocked: yes', do

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock all
now do the ceni routine again and see if it does work this time. it did for me.

1) Please post your output of

Code: Select all

 lspci -nnk
2) DHCP enabled on the router?

3) Try rhowaldt's suggestion to unlink the killswitch.

4) Change the colour scheme in .Xresources - that's what the BBQ releases are for.

In Specky, run

Code: Select all

ping -c 3 8.8.8.8
ping -c 3 google.com
and see if you get a ping reaction back. The first pings google's IP address, and the second uses the DNS resolver. If the second fails, you need to enter the DNS servers, like 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 or 208.67.220.220 to your ceni or Wicd or router.
Remember last time you told me to remove DHCPDISCOVER. I did it, now we have this.

yay! Bacon is the man!
no DNS!
typed in the chinese lucky number in wicd-client and Robert, is indeed, a close family member. 8)

posting from specky (roaster) right now. 8D

oh, btw i don't remember telling you to remove anything, i wondered what was happening, then i asked how to disable (eth0, iirc ) on my install.
I couldn't, nor wouldn't, begin to presume to tell you how to run this ship.
Not only because you roast these spins real good, but as proved here, I'm waay out of my depth in pretty simple technical issues. 8)

OK this isn't really a bug - more a support question.
thanks for sorting it out.

;-)
In the past releases I had the DNS servers put into a file and they were automatically entered in the network devices, now this time with Wicd the users have to do it themselves. I could add "Enter a DNS server if your router doesn't assign one for you" to the cookbook ("Manage network" section)

Thank you, glad you like it.
(The green screen is trying to look&feel like the P1 phosphor monitors. The other colour scheme - used for root - is a mock-up of P3 phosphor monochrome, also quite eye-pleasing, but needs heavy configuration in the Xresources file)

Try to access your router from a browser (some routers can be accessed by typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar, others react on 192.168.0.1 or something completely different, refer to your users manual) and override the setting to 'acquire DNS from the ISP' if you are happy with 8.8.8.8 or 208.67.220.220 -- of course this depends on your setup and your router (modem?), so don't take it literally. Being in China I have to override the ISP settings all the time, else I wouldn't even be able to write here ... :/

^ tried this with my modem out of curiosity, but i don't have that option, sadly. i suppose it depends on the type of modem, whether it allows you to change stuff like that.

^ Yes, supposedly routers have that setting when they are separated from a modem. For luck we can override it in Linux using different methods (one is the /etc/resolvconf/* or /etc/resolv.conf file, another is the usage of nm-tool or nm-applet, and of course wicd/ceni/..)
