bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
how come gnome3 doesn't like systemd?
it runs only JWM (which is nice) or 'classic' gnome on fallback
i simply apt-got systemd.
changed the boot line to init=/bin/systemd.... gets to GDM then fallsback.
not a massive problem. kinda odd, no?

Re: bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
DId you sudo update-grub after editing the GRUB file?
Shouldn't be a problem to get systemd with Gnome3. Just don't install the mixed systemd-sysvitin package.

Re: bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
oh.
i didn't make the grub file persistent.
I understood that to try it out one could alter the boot line 'just once'
iirc that worked before.
would making it stick, by doing as you suggested be better?
as i seems not to work, i won't right now.
as for the packages dpgk -l gives;
like i posted, JWM and fallback mode work fine, gnome shell refuses.
i'm using GDM BTW.... maybe somethings awry there.
otherwise standard bauchspeck64 ( I have upg-ed to latest gnome)

Then it seems that your gfx driver cannot jump into the real Gnome3 mode, which is quite normal if you have an on-board gfx adapter...
What's the lspci for VGA?

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03)
On a side note,
Interestingly, I just installed boner, it needed nomodeset to display after booting.
Anyway spamming again. :-)

Re: bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
And IIRC both cinnamon and gnome need a 3D acceleration else they fall back to a 2D mode (kind of what compiz was doing in previous Gnome2 desktops), and I strongly doubt any connection to systemd (except if you can give me some keywords), no seriously I doubt there's a connection - even worse: Gnome3 and systemd are hard dependencies in certain distros - not in Debian. Please keep in mind that we sit on two horses, even with a 'full-systemd' configuration you still get sysvinit -- Debian, yes yes...

Re: bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
OK, with that in mind, I might attempt to go the other way, and install gnome from a systemd base.
See what happens :-)

Let me rephrase that :-)
Systemd and my gfx card don't get along :-)

hey wux, w/o hijacking this thread, do you find bauchspeck to run hot? I notice I'm always hovering 50F as opposed to low to mid 40's.

Re: bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
hi Jack. 8P
i don't have a temp gauge installed.
seems that my twin turbines don't start up much.
you got me worried now 8)
on topic - the other installs seem to need vga=778 on boot, i know, that's depreciated, works though.
oh a natural systemd install (keilbasa) didn't like gnome3 installed either...
don't worry i'll be soon posting boring blog articles instead of spamming here, with my nonsense. 8)

dkeg, grab the liquorix and compare. Which kernel version is hot? 3.6-8 (?) and 3.7.x were a bit hotter than 3.8

Re: bauchspeck not a fan of systemd
well, the -other- thing was i needed the intel drivers from xorg to make the framebuffer work OOTB, I think it might have nothing to do with systumd not working. 8)

hey Jules, running the latest and greatest ... 3.8.9.machinebacon wrote:dkeg, grab the liquorix and compare. Which kernel version is hot? 3.6-8 (?) and 3.7.x were a bit hotter than 3.8
After borking and saving my Kielbasa, I ended up figuring out what the culprit was. You know me and my twitter, so searching twitter clients, found and installed hotot. Was actually my second choice after Turpial, but nonetheless, chose Hotot. Back here in Kielbasa, also added in Hotot, and bam, temp went right up. Banged it out and went to Turpial and no problems. Turpial is much better anyway, integrates nicely and uses dunst for notifications.
so @wux, no worries bro, don't let the heat get ya. Funny thing, even in bauchspeck I end up using i3. What's wrong with me.

lol
That's really interesting - does hotot spawn crap in the background? Well, it's in the name after all.
Thanks for the update.

No background processe, at last that htop showed, only had a single process, however did carryout with it it's own notification system. that's probably the cause.
Yeah my manhood felt threatened anyway so much happier with turpial. And the integration with dunst is a huge plus.
EDIT: pstree had also not shown any abnormalities, just one process for hotot. ZZZZZZZZ ...
