Mate Multimedia keys

Unread post by Verändert » Tue May 28, 2013 8:49 am

Hi, right after i managed to kill my Cinnamon install, i chose to install Mate (Rauchfleischdingsbums). My first problem was, that i seemed to be unable to control the sound volume with the multimedia keys (HP655, screen brightness key shows increasing and decreasing brightness but doesn't actually change it; will look into that later). Sound works, though, and i can control it with the mouse.

Any idea how to use all of my multimedia keys ?

Maybe this helps: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=102626

It has to do with the dbus names in mate-settings-daemon (which are changed to prevent conflict with GNOME). Probably you can use hotkeys to control amixer (http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/using/amixer shows some ideas) -- of course this only works if the media keys are actually registered (open a terminal, enter "xev" and hit the media keys - if xev shows feedback, they are registered -- if not, we have to dig into it)

^ After installing Cinnamon to the hard drive do either:
- not perform a dist-upgrade (I recommend this)
- or set the libgtk3-* packages on hold

The system works perfectly fine without dist-upgrade - you can, however, sync the database with sudo apt-get update (or "upd") and install apps that hopefully don't depends on the newer version of gtk3...

Just my opinion :)

It's no fun to have a rolling distro when you can't update half of your packages. So i will try Mate. The keys are recognized alright, I don't even need xev for that. I will install now and see what i get to work myself and then cry for help when i try to update packages with pacman again...

^ Nah, it's not half of the packages ;)

Code: Select all

apt-cache rdepends libgtk-3-* | wc -l

gives a quite exact number of taboo packages :)

And it's not like forever, anyway. But yeah, MATE is the rocker...

For the moment my Mate install keeps annoying me because it insists to be a vanilla Mate install rather than the Argentina one. Will throw random things at computer and report back after system upgrade.

Another problem with Mate I have Wux as you are the specialist, the above just worked at first run, now it always segfaults when run from terminal. I reported that in the Mate forums but they wanted me to report that on their github, will not make a new account their at the moment. :D

Edit:

Code: Select all

mate-keybinding-properties
segfaults.

I always rename the old user "data" when i install something. So that should not be the problem.

Mate seems to be tricky- i always have to use radeon.modeset=0 to be able to boot but i can't install the proprietary driver. I am suddenly missing some apps in the panel without deleting them.

^ That's network-manager-gnome (depends on libgtk3-*), simply use Ceni to set up your network and remove the whole network-manager crap.

About radeon.modeset=0 do this:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
change the entry there to
options radeon modeset=0
save and exit. Should work after boot.

Have you already edited /etc/grub/default to add radeon.modeset=0 and done a sudo update-grub afterwards?

Expert on mate! You jest sir!

Verdana - have you checked out bbqfix? Bacons all in one fixer, I haven't tried the gfx card install, I managed to avoid radon :-)

@bacon: I know, yet i would like to use kernel mode setting
@wux: bbqfix installs nvidia drivers, not those for ATI.

@wux: ATi should be supported by the "firmware-linux-nonfree" package, and everything else is a matter of Catalyst (which leads to Xorg bork) -> sgfxi

@veraendert: I have little to no idea about ATi, but does fglrx do something for you? http://siduction.org/index.php?name=PNp ... pic&t=2494

The interesting thing is that the freeware driver works with cinnamon. Linux can be strange sometimes...

I don't know if it brings anything, but

apt-cache policy glx-alternative-mesa

Is this one installed, and if no: how does it behave after installing? (Shouldn't break much)
