Network Manager managed to disappear [solved]

Unread post by pottzie » Wed May 29, 2013 6:42 pm

So I've installed bubba-que to yet another computer ( I like BBQ!). I freaked (on another install) when I rebooted (after the first boot and running all the upgrades), and there was no wireless icon in the system tray, only to be pleasantly surprised that wireless was working OK, and just the icon was missing. Now that I've installed it on a different computer, I have the same thing again, only this time it's dropping the connection. When I try to open Network Manager, the app just flashes a black panel for like a millisecond, and disappears. I also noticed that when I did all the updates, there was a line or two saying NM had failed to download, or something to that affect.

If NM was working, I'd let it ride, but other than trying something like 'wlan0 up' in a terminal, and having it say that command sounded like something I just made up (because it is), how can I get I get NM to work, and the icon in the tray so I can see if it's connected?

Yes, that's a bug in libgtk3-* ... Check the upgrade warnings, it's mentioned there :)

Fact is that libgtk3-* is a dependency of a bunch of themes, and of network-manager-gnome, and this bug causes a segmentation fault. You can check it by starting nm-applet from the terminal. It doesn't help much. Search the forums for libgtk3, you see some posts related to it.

What you can do? Try wicd-gtk for network-manager-gnome, or go with our baby "Ceni" that can beautifully set up your network, too :)

To replace network-manager-* with wicd, you would:

sudo apt-get install wicd wicd-gtk
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge network-manager-*
sudo service wicd start

and check this (really!): http://linuxbbq.org/cookbook/faq.html#net

Good luck!

Another option: extract the attached folder ("Numix") into /usr/share/themes/ and then choose Numix as theme in your system (also for root)

Just tried ceni, and it showed that another application had the system locked, network manager I assume. Ceni said to delete /var/run/wpa-supplicant, but I'm holding off doing that for now. I have this set up as a dual boot, and I have to boot into Mint to post this, as BBQ/network manager no longer connects to wireless, even when I reboot.

I used to use wicd, in fact for a while I preferred it over network manager. This was when wicd was well supported, and NM was still in need of a lot of help. That situation seems to be reversed now, as even Slackware has thrown in the towel on wicd, and ships with NM. I wish wicd was still being supported, but if you think it's reliable, I might give it a shot and see. I know that wicd and NM can't be on the same system. If I'm not happy with wicd, how hard is it to uninstall and try something else?

Go the Numix way, I would say.

I use Wicd. :) Works perfectly and also Salix has it as default. ;) If you can apt-get it, it is supported at least in Debian and does the job.

They can, just don't run them at the same time. ;) Install/remove is easy peasy, just do not remove one of them at the same time so that you end up without a graphical client if that is what you need as the CLI is still there.

Just downloaded Numix. When I tried to extract it to /usr/share/themes using the xarchiver gui, I keep getting a message saying that an error had occurred. Not sure how to use xarchiver, tried with my root password and without, kept getting the same message.occured

assume in downloads directory

Code: Select all

cd downloads
tar -xvf numixtheme
mkdir ~/.themes
mv numix ~/.themes
Now you should be good to go.

Had to change a few things, wouldn't extract until I used tar -xzvf.

Made it to here:
root@dell:/home/larry/Downloads# tar -xfv numix.tar.gz
tar: v: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
root@dell:/home/larry/Downloads# tar -zxvf numix.tar.gz

That went OK, thanks for the help. Now does NM need anything else to work, or do I just start over with a reboot?

well that depends ... if you haven't done anything to keep it from starting / autostarting then a reboot should definitely work. However you could probably just run

Code: Select all

pkill nm-applet
nm-applet &
if Network Manager is already running and only the applet is not visible. if NM is not running you can

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/NetworkManager

Work hard; Complain less

I've rebooted, and it's been working for several hours now. Looks like it's working, it couldn't connect at all before, so I'll mark this solved.

It's interesting that I have BBQ on three different computers, and NM behaves differently on each of them. I started on a Pentium III laptop that is so under whelming that Crunchbang was all that would work on it. And the #! forum is what pointed me to Linux BBQ. Network Manager has worked on that computer since the first boot, icon is in the package tray, etc. I forgot that I had it plugged in, and it's been working flawlessly for a couple of weeks now.

That made me wonder how BBQ would work on a PC that I have, that has an old AMD chip that defies most Linux OS's. NM works, and while the wireless icon is nowhere to be found, NM has been working for well over a week.

Next I installed to a Dell Latitude d520, using the same 32 bit disc to install BBQ, and that's where things went in the pooper, and I ran into the problem that started this thread. Same software, three different hardware combos, three different results. Weird.

Thanks to everyone for all the help

Hi,
at least for one of the PCs there's an explanation: everything works well until the first dist-upgrade. It's possible that you performed the last dist-upgrade (if ever) before libgtk-3 was broken upstream.

But seriously, the icon is the only 'good' thing about network-manager. The application itself does not do anything else than ceni (or a manual configuration of the /etc/network/interfaces file) would do.

It is possible to connect to wireless/wired network without network-manager, just by using either Ceni (or wicd) or manually calling ifup/ifdown. I would definitely recommend to read a few manuals and howtos about it, because it can save your trouble, generally, on Linux computers. It might happen some day that the Xserver doesn't come up, but you need a network connection from tty (console) - in this case a few write-ups are worth gold.

But good to know it (at least/at last) works :)

What Mr. Crispy Bacon says.

Don't forget we are here on Sid, a moving target, I mean all the fun comes to us first and I assure you when you read regularly the output of apt-listbugs and our upgrade warnings, you won't get any problems at all. The art of Debian Unstable is to let others be the first in getting bitten by the nasty bugs such like this one you experience right now that IMO is still a no issue. Crunchbang is on Stable, that is why we are here, we want the fun.

Some read from our Wiki:
Running a system based on Sid makes you responsible for keeping your system in shape (in contrast to Debian's 'Stable' branch, where the work has already been done for you). We believe that when you use your computer day in and day out, you should be able to make a little effort to keep it working properly.
and how to surivive:

From where I'm at, this OS is fast, fun, and mostly "just works." That said, I've never been a fan of Debian, although every distro that's based on it seems to be the most reliable, albeit most of those same OS's coming with more baggage than a visiting mother-in-law.

So I'm willing to see what happens next. I had Arch until they switched to systemd, and turned my working system into a door stop. That happens, as they say, so I'm on board for a few burps and system farts.

The BBQ gives it best to even make Debian as unstable as possible :)

Actually Debian's half-assed decision to partly integrate systemd (step by step) is quite clever. Until now it has not let me (us?) down much :)
