MATE64 suspend on lid down.[solved]

Unread post by wuxmedia » Sat Jun 15, 2013 7:56 am

so i close the lid, screen blanks only - came home to a hot computer. 8(
by habit i press power key to wake up, computer shuts down...
tried to change the options in the powermanager, no options for suspend, or anything other than; off, or screen blank.
typing sudo pm-suspend works fine.

I think i had this before, on mate-rc1/2?? but i can't even think about how i fixed it last time.

any ideas?

In doubt, consult the MATE forums - we get their stuff directly from their repos, and I don't alter anything.

http://forums.mate-desktop.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=334

Install a display manager (lightdm, be careful though) and the problem shall be fixed.

i did, i clocked that thread, and your right that's how it was resolved last time.
but tbh i was lazy and didn't actually read it. also i wasn't too keen on a displaymanager.
oh well it is a DE not a barebones.

Hmmm, last time (RC1/2) had LightDM installed, maybe you spun a Boner/Virgin plus MATE repos? I do remember that last time the desktop-settings tool caused 100% CPU, admittedly a bug in MATE and apparently fixed. Maybe you had that app open before, it hogged the CPU, then you closed the lid...

Can you reproduce (if you haven't yet installed a DM) the problem: log in to MATE, open htop, check lm_sensors (if installed), then close the lid, open it after a minute and check the lm_sensors and htop?

I removed LightDM from the recent releases because of some serious bugs in the greeter, please check the Upgrade Warnings for instuctions on how to get it to work safely.

oh - i like theres no Display Manager.
i'm not that much of a spinner! just the bacon magic for complex stuff.

it's not that it's impeded running - it isn't an option...

lm-sensors wasn't installed i installed it, not much different. I haven't actually touched many apps, just screensaver poweman and iceweasel mostly.
i'll have a look at the RC to see whats different.

Ah here we go! Alright, so it is definitely depending on a DM - though it would be great to see which DMs support this! gdm3 is a bit over the top, isnt it ;)

^ xdm does not seem to, i tried it on XFCE, because i have the same issue there.
its light! but seems not to have any effect on suspend, so I installed Slim and that worked right away.
(i had to install xfce4-power-manager too.)
there was a script floating around %@ for a pm-suspend on lid close.

MATE is using some gdm (gtk2-version) fork, I think (!) it's only in their launchpad/ppa. Well, then we have them all covered (no, no kdm this time)
Seems there's really need for a normal display manager that doesn't suck.

well, personally the DM is unnecessary - now that i understand a bit about xinit, xwhatever seems pointless (apart from suspend on lid close, obviously)

Better than spacefun.

If you want to dig deeper into console-kit, power-manager, polkit, dbus, and all that crappy freedesktop stuff: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-85 ... ricks.html (yes yes I know it's gentoo, but the points raised are quite interesting -- remember, the MATE Base is completely stripped off, there's no consolekit, and no udisks and upower, IIRC!)

Good night :D
