can I install Virtualbox?[solved]

We don't support installations in VirtualBox, VMWare, qemu or others. We ignore posts about WINE, PlayOnLinux, Steam and Skype. We don't support btrfs, lvm, UEFI, side-by-side installations with GPT or dualboot with anything newer than Windows XP.
Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

can I install Virtualbox?[solved]

Unread post by pottzie » Mon Jul 22, 2013 9:29 am

I'm running BBQ mate 64 bit. Can I run Virtualbox on it, and if yes, which version do I download from Virtualbox? Debian 7.0 Wheezy looks like the nearest match, but does Sid work with it, and do kernel upgrades wreck VB?

Will (quite surely) work. That being said, I go full iron.

virtualbox virtualbox-qt virtualbox-dkms

should bring in what you need (the -qt package is actually the frontend)

^ ah thanks, i meant to give him that info but forgot what the package was called. forgetting to install the -qt was what frustrated me when my VB wouldn't work :)

OK, I'll give it a shot. With most distros, and definitely Ubuntu and Mint, I'm sure that it needs to be installed using the download from Oracle's website, even though Ubuntu always has it in their repository. Reason being that the Package Manager versions are always out of date, and VB works best when it's at the newest version.

But I'll have a go with this and see what happens. Thanks.

Edit: Looks like I've installed Virtual Box, successfully. Thanks.

If everything goes well, you get the siduction version, 4.2.12 which is two revisions newer than Debian sid's version.
Some time ago I wrote this HOWTO, should (and does) work with BBQ: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=21351
