after booting into MATE, lightdm seemingly refused my login/password... confused (I change passwords for each spin) i logged into a tty no probs.
after fiddling around, i went back to the lightdm login and realised the session switcher pulldown had moved, so i clicked on the little spanner icon chose 'mate' and again after my password. then it started mate...
~/.xsessions is empty apart from a #! bin/sh - what should i add to it, if anything?
Will it remember my choice?

Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

Re: lightdm and MATE 32 oddness
Check if you got a .dmrc file in the home folder. Can't verify now (no DM here), but that one should save the sessions.
