Looking to make a distro but i am a noob and want to learn?

We don't support installations in VirtualBox, VMWare, qemu or others. We ignore posts about WINE, PlayOnLinux, Steam and Skype. We don't support btrfs, lvm, UEFI, side-by-side installations with GPT or dualboot with anything newer than Windows XP.
Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

Holy shit. It pays off to trawl the forum for older posts sometimes. Excuse me while I go wipe the tears away.

If this fellow is really wanting to learn, I would dare to suggest Linux From Scratch (LFS) or something like that.
I am currently giving Funtoo a try (that is why I have not been trolling here of late), and it is great. But still too easy, with all those configuration scripts and stuff.
I think I would have learnt a lot more if I had to configure everything by hand ;-)
I still need to test it for a few more weeks in order to check whether is as usable as Debian and whether it is stable enough (whether updates break something and so on), but, performance-wise, it seems like a keeper.
The main problem is that compiling everything from source takes a little while... ;-)

^ is there anybody who has run LFS for longer than a few days/weeks? Or anybody who runs LFS *only*? Nah :D

I do not now of anyone. Well, maybe the developers ;-)machinebacon wrote:^ is there anybody who has run LFS for longer than a few days/weeks? Or anybody who runs LFS *only*? Nah :D
However, I, a Debian user since 2008, am seriously considering migrating to something like Gentoo or Funtoo. I am exploring Funtoo on a test laptop and, in a few weeks, I will decide on whether or not it would be a good idea migrating my workstations.
As I said, it will depend mostly on stability and on whether or not the performance gain compensates for the time and resources spent compiling.
I use my workstations for number-crunching and they are typically using their full capacity all the time. Some calculations last for months and so any performance gain would be welcome.

Sounds interesting. Some calculations last for months
Work hard; Complain less

This thread is fantastic. I laughed so hard. I am just oh so sorry that you all had to deal with the non-sense. I know I came I was a noob but kidx never seemed to try to learn on his own. I am glad you guys actually like me and accept me into the community :)

I was just curious of why some people were put on the troll lists. And wux, I am sure you were not even a loser at all. :D
