Suggestions for netbook install

We don't support installations in VirtualBox, VMWare, qemu or others. We ignore posts about WINE, PlayOnLinux, Steam and Skype. We don't support btrfs, lvm, UEFI, side-by-side installations with GPT or dualboot with anything newer than Windows XP.
Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

Suggestions for netbook install

Unread post by missinglink » Sun Aug 18, 2013 10:13 pm

Somewhat related to papabacon's "The Future of amd64 spins" thread, but NOT due to it.
Short version - which BBQ as base distro for this net/notebook?
Long version with hardware details ...
I'm ready to wipe my netbook's #! 11 64bit install and start over with (likely) a Darkside 32(?) spin.
With MB's guidance, I got the Broadcom 4313 cooperating.
That box is Asus's 10.1" 1366x768 non-glare with a Celeron 847 inside. It came with Ubuntu 12.04LTS preinstalled on a 320GB HD.
I split the case, swapped the HD for a SanDisk 256GB SSD, verified (dammit) the ram is indeed mobo embedded.
Video (not mine) of opening similarly constructed Asus 1015PED.
See top and bottom mobo views if you're curious about what Asus did. Sorry I didn't have a proper camera when I shot those pics, mobo in one hand, shaky phone in the other. Yes, I was pissed that they didn't include a replaceable ram slot like my Atom powered 1025C. Maybe next time they'll include upgradeable ram with a real processor. At this point, it's fairly trivial to have to split the case, rather than having removable panels underneath. Pensi-faced Ass-us just does not care, when they have a rainbow of "vibrant colors to best express your style" to produce.
Sooo, any reason I need 64bit? Keep in mind my 32bit 1025C Atom netbook is just fine for editing the videos I've done. And that was using the Win7 partition, upgraded to Home Premium and 2GB, 128GB SSD.
As to the rest of the space on the 256GB, opinionate on partitioning. Currently running the #! install one ext4 partition, no swap. All my critical files are always external. USB/sneakernet copy as needed to bring work into the netbook, copy it out as needed has worked fine for me.
Any chance of using Windows on this box would likely only be my old clean copy of XP-Pro SP3, virtualized. Aside from other BBQ distros (Bakewell a must), I'd like a Ubuntu-whatever partition for PPAs.
Lemme have it, seasoned with kidxJr comments.
"We have better things to do than read this crap. Nobody cares about your lame-ass marinamarlowebook. We'll never get back the time we could have spent downloading porn. sda1-12 ubuntu/kubuntu/xu/lu/pclinuxos/kidxInferno. Carve a dozen 20GB ext4's and move along with your miserable life."

  • * 2 GB is plenty of memory
    * 8-10 GB is more than enough space for an entire BBQ install, if all your shared data is elsewhere
    * you might consider several small partitions for spins, and one large shared data partition (not shared /home, just shared data like wallpapers and music)
    * if 32-bit worked well for you before, it will work well for you here
    * what spin you choose won't matter much, as you can install or remove what you really need
    * more recent spins will have smaller dist-upgrades and fewer problems upgrading
    * more recent spins have less crap (like lightdm) installed
    * what do you really need in your base?
Coal32 is a good starting point at this stage of BBQ development, IMO, but you might like darkside better if you need some of the features that are included with it.

Thanks, pids.
Not that it really matters when I'm going to choose distro at boot, but my everyday spin pref is CB-like Openbox. Hence my Darkside suggestion.
There will absolutely be an LXDE spin. (Just noticed Coal is missing from wiki.) Previously, Trollinger 32 was what I showed folks when Linux came up. It just always worked on random notebooks when I'm out and about.
I'll of course include noob-learner (me) distro - like e.g., Bakewell. Gotta use that - I asked!
The rest basically seems like best partition practice. If I install and want space back, just live distro GParted wipe & reclaim the space. Unless I screw something up with a bungled shared partition. I did read your comment no shared /home. When I'm running live, I typically just access data in partitions as I need 'em. If I'm worried about screwing it up, I copy the file and don't copy it back after any changes w/o renaming. I've not seen that as an inconvenience, nor can I remember problems. What am I missing?
Oh yeah, I've never paid attention to TRIM for SSDs. This current install is the first time I included no swap. I don't hibernate/sleep. Full shutdown every time.
I think ~600MB is the most ram I've ever noticed in conky. That was a buttload of Iceweasel tabs open for many hours, music streaming, YouTube, copying files to/from usb key, etc. Need to try duplicating a long surf session with Chrome, see if it uses fewer resources. Perhaps evidence of memory leakage - like I know what the hell that is.

I'll be afk till Monday ~noon EDT. Thanks, again.

Got back online just to apologize for not remembering the Install LinuxBBQ wiki post courtesy papabacon and rhowaldt. Sorry, guys. A nice walkthrough with screenshots, and voila, Leslie Anusson aka pensibonsu is hooked up with one sweet Aleutian install.
Now where's my MILF 686 iso?
