LinuxBBQ XFCE4 - HDD/Partition not always seen but mountable

Unread post by PBMax » Tue Aug 20, 2013 7:59 am

Hello,

I was about to begin playing with Rocks! when I discovered I have issues (no pun intended). While installing Rocks!, I went to delete an exiting partition to use for Rocks! and gparted only saw the hard drive with no partitions. What was shown in the partition area of gparted was unallocated space with an exclamation sign. It's explanation was an incorrect partition table. What is weird is how I can mount the partitions and work with the files without issue. I'm very afraid doing too much for fear of really dinking it up.

I logged in, sudo su, tried to fsck the disk by partition sequentially. With the first partition being sda1/ntfs, fsck returned an error about not finding fsck.ntfs. I went into /sbin and sure enough, no fsck.ntfs.

@machinebacon: I didn't try to install Rocks! again but I did save the outputs (shown below) for "uname -a", "blkid -o list", "fdisk -l" and "lspci -nnk".

Re: LinuxBBQ XFCE4 - HDD/Partition not always seen but mount

Hello,

the problem is that the first partition is a NTFS filesystem, and probably the first bytes do not have a valid partition table. This is a common problem I have discovered on drives that have Win7 installed. Additionally, the warnings about the 'sector boundary' are related to the fact that the block size can't be divided by the sector size. For what it's worth, this is a problem that is not related to LinuxBBQ (or any other distro)

In fact, I had this problem on a mixed drive too, and most importantly *do NOT* use gparted's function to 'automatically write the partition table' after selecting the hard drive, because it will completely **** up your drive and you will have to manually recreate the partition table with testdisk. So, remember: *NO*.

I take it that you want to install on /dev/sda7 and the GRUB to /dev/sda -- how I hate mixed installs, especially when Win7 is there... either GRUb is not written, or Win7 doesn't boot up, or both, so I don't want to recommend anything.

I hope somebody else can give a definite answer here, I don't want to be responsible for ****ing up your partitions :)

If it's me, I would use 'sudo bbqinstaller' and pick /dev/sda7 to install the OS to, and GRUB to /dev/sda -- it's an old-fashioned installer, and works best when a partition is already prepared. Hasn't failed on me yet. But then again, this is not my computer and I don't use Windows :)

Thanks machinebacon. Especially because it's not a LinuxBBQ problem and you still gave me enough info to work from :)

I'll wipe the drive and start with the linux partitions (2 different distros) then my Windows partitions. Now, without getting too into this, after installing Windows, how do I get grub back?

Reinstalling GRUB is way easier than fixing the Windows bootloader. The easiest way: by installing a Linux, then running

sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo update-grub

or even better, check out this script:
http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=492

You'd make it executable (chmod +x howeveryoucallit.sh) and then run it as root.

Nice. I've created that script and started backup of my data before the wipe.

Thanks again, machinebacon!
