pcmanfm in trouble

Unread post by Sector11 » Mon Aug 26, 2013 7:29 pm

Just did update && dist-upgrade:

Code: Select all

 26 Aug 13 | 15:13:25 ~
    $ get pcmanfm
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 pcmanfm : Depends: libfm-gtk3 (>= 1.0.2) but it is not going to be installed
           Depends: libfm3 (>= 1.0.2) but it is not going to be installed

    $ dpkg --get-selections | grep hold

A stripped down, gutted and mutilated version of another OS that is Debian SID. Just applied the BBQ sources.list to it this am - less the bbq repos - have to ask about that.

I call it:

Code: Select all

 26 Aug 13 | 16:15:46 ~
    $ lsb_release -ds
Sector11 0.01

 26 Aug 13 | 16:15:53 ~

@sector 11 - It is simple. You need to install libfm3.

Doesn't matter I haven't used it in a long time but just curious as to why.

Typically this kind of thing happens (as bacon mentioned) when there is a delay between the updates for a library and a program that depends on that library. Usually this situation is resolved in a few hours or days, but sometimes it persists for longer. Try another update/dist-upgrade. Do you have apt-listbugs installed? This package can sometimes warn you of problems like this.

Also -- if you really don't use pcmanfm you might consider just removing it from your system. The fewer unnecessary programs you keep around the fewer problems you will have in the future. This is part of why I like coreutils so much; they never break. :)

[moderator note] I split this part of the topic out and moved it to "BBQ support" -- some people subscribe to the warnings section and get notified when there are new posts there. This part of the topic is more related to support, and splitting it out helps keep the upgrade warnings section tidy. Thanks for understanding.

@ pidsley - yea, this makes more sense, thanks

@ machinebacon

Sure thing:

Code: Select all

 26 Aug 13 | 23:59:43 ~
    $ apt-cache policy pcmanfm
pcmanfm:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.1.2-1
  Version table:
     1.1.2-1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
     1.1.1-0r0 0
        200 http://packages.siduction.org/fixes/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
     1.1.0~siduction.2 0
        200 http://packages.siduction.org/experimental/ unstable/main amd64 Packages

 27 Aug 13 | 00:05:46 ~
    $
still get the error:

Code: Select all

 27 Aug 13 | 00:05:46 ~
    $ get pcmanfm
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

I see it is late over there, better go to bed and try again tomorrow - no kidding: seems the Debian upstream has fixed pcmanfm and the related packages will come with the next update cycle. So, no need to do anything, just wait until the libfm3* packages follow upstream.

Code: Select all

  Version table:
     1.1.2-1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
Funny that they fixed amd64 first. In the 32bit it is still the old version.

Sleep well ;)

Edit: of course never forget to update before installing, but you have this in your alias anyway.
