[SOLVED] ceni - problem with wpa wireless

[SOLVED] ceni - problem with wpa wireless

Unread post by GekkoP » Mon Sep 09, 2013 10:20 pm

I know you already knew it: a noob is going to ask for help soon. So here I am.
I got ceni (because I'm on a road to be cool but I'm not quite there) working fine with a WEP wireless connection. And it is working smoothly with my eth0 interface. I removed NetworkManager, of course.

The only thing left is wireless with WPA. Whatever option I chose in ceni the connection is not working. I'm just sitting near my router, ceni says SIG is "-11" (and I don't know wheter is good or not, sorry for my ignonance) and in the end just before exit it says: No DHCPOFFERS received. The funny thing is that on my conky bar I can see my network SSID.

I tried also to comment out the line "option rfc3443-..." in dhclient.conf as suggested on some Ubuntu forum I don't remember anymore, but nothing changed.

Here's my /etc/network/interfaces just to give you some other details:

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-psk xxxxxxxx
    wpa-ssid yyyyyyyy

allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface default inet dhcp

Unread post by GekkoP » Tue Sep 10, 2013 7:03 am

Also, in a hopeless shot in order to not bother you guys with my noob problems, I tried setting up roaming with ceni and wpa_gui. As I said before, I got two wireless I need to configure: one WEP, already working, and one WPA2. So it would be nice if I can let the system automatically choose the right connection.

So now this is how my /e/n/i looks like:

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
	wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa-roam.conf

allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface boccaperta inet dhcp

iface casa inet dhcp

iface default inet dhcp
And this is wpa-roam.conf:

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
	key_mgmt=NONE
	disabled=1
}

network={
	ssid="aaaaaa"
	psk="yyyyyy"
	proto=RSN
	key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
	pairwise=CCMP
	auth_alg=OPEN
	id_str="casa"
}

network={
	ssid="bbbbbb"
	key_mgmt=NONE
	auth_alg=SHARED
	wep_key0="xxxxxx"
	priority=10
	id_str="boccaperta"
}

I had a similar problem on an older laptop and a USB wlan stick, which only supported WEP and no WPA.

To be honest, I have no idea about your card -- check the device number [1028:000b] is a quite rare one, it seems, and it is not listed in Debian's hardware wiki. However, google brought up this post: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17368 -> post #11 and also http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 61669.html -> post #5

You wired network is working, so you can really try to get rid of the staging drivers. If it all fails, we still have Mr xaos52 :D

@OP: There is only one wireless device detected according to lspci. Is the second one an USB device?
Is the pci one working or the USB one?

When you switch from network-manager to ceni, you better reboot after disabling and stopping network-manager. Configure your wireless with ceni after the reboot. Post output of dmesg after running ceni.
Connected. Take this REPL, brother, and may it serve you well.

I got only one wireless device, the pci one. I did reboot when switching from network-manager to ceni.

dmesg output (it was very long, so I took only the latest lines. If something you think could be useful is missing please tell me):

Try to install or re-install package firmware-b43-lpphy-installer.

The version you are using dates from 2008.

Code: Select all

Package firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

    wheezy (stable) (kernel): Installer package for firmware for the b43 driver (LP-PHY version) [contrib]
    1:015-14.1: all
Connected. Take this REPL, brother, and may it serve you well.

Latest version of that package seems to be the one on wheezy. I tried reinstalling it as you suggest but nothing changes.

The laptop giving the issues is running CrunchBang Waldorf at the moment. I can take it as an excuse to move on to some BBQ release if nothing can be done. :)

And wireless works with network-manager, or not?

Yes. Everything worked fine up until yesterday. Now it is working with WEP wireless and with eth0. Only WPA2 is left.

Don't know if it helps, but conky keeps changing from "Net: my-home-net" to "Net: off/any".

Switch off roaming for the moment. Lets try and get it working with the simplest configuration.
Edit /etc/network/configurations manually with this content:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-psk ***********
wpa-ssid ************

replace the stars with your password and ssid. Make sure the password is correct. Upper case or lower case matters.
Connected. Take this REPL, brother, and may it serve you well.

Done. Still no network. (and conky still doing is "blinking")

(and of course, thanks for your patience)

reboot with network-manager disabled.
run

ceni wlan0 --debug

and configure your wireless. Do not use roaming.

After ceni terminates, post the debugging output, which you will find in file /tmp/ceni.log

Now I'm in my office. Same laptop, ceni's working good with wi-fi here.
When at home tonight I'll do as you say and let you know.

Can you run ceni in terminal window. Use

Code: Select all

sudo ceni
reconfigure your wireless interface wlan0 at home.
When the configuration is complete it will show a list like this one:

edit /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa-roam.conf, change the 'casa' config to

Code: Select all

network={
   ssid="aaaaaa"
   psk="yyyyyy"
   id_str="casa"
}
And run

Code: Select all

sudo ifdown wlan0
sudo ifup wlan0
sudo wpa_gui
and select the 'casa' network.
Should work.
