Help needed to get Inspiron working!!

Hello, ladies and other forms of ladies :P .
This is my first post on this marvellous hell hole, so I thought I should bring my most daunting problem to the table :D


I have a dell inspiron 630m, a really old one. I was thinking of putting vegeta on it. I'm faced with the challenge of getting everything working on it (Bluetooth, Wireless-p0rn,.... yada yada).

Guide me O great ones, so I may enjoy my old lappy :D

I suggest you start with one of the no-X 32-bit BBQ installs, or slackware 32-bit, so we can all learn sth useful.
You will have to feed us the info: what have you done already, where did it go wrong etc...

ok, what do i need to do after that!!! i mean the packages i need to install and steps i need to do to get it working as suggested at disgruntledgoat. Gentoo is greek to me :(

Sounds to me like you are a newb trying to jump in at the deep end.
I doubt anyone here is willing to guide you through installing gentoo step by step.

That is why I suggested installing a binary distro first. If that works, you can always try gentoo later.

Does the system boot now? Does it boot from CD-ROM or USB?

Have you already successfully installed Vegeta on the machine? If yes, have your run "sudo ceni" and set up networking? If yes, and it didn't work out, post your "lspci -nnk" and "lsusb -v" if you use a dongle.

You could just read the wiki, everything you could need is in there.

As we don't know what actually the problems are you are facing (you didn't answer if you have already installed Vegeta, tried 'sudo ceni' to create eth and/or wlan connections), we have to use the crystal ball. If wireless doesn't work you could try using the 'wl' drivers - provided you have the ethernet connection working.

So, please
1) is Vegeta installed and updated/dist-upgraded?
2) did you install the linux-image-siduction-i686 package to make sure to get the newest kernel?
3) did you set up network with sudo ceni?
4) tell us what does *not* work.

Okay, I'll start with the thing that's most important.
1. I have a screen of 1280x800 resolution, vegeta doesnot detect that. And after installation when I type in startx snapwm doesn't comeup. Just a plain terminal window.
2. With ceni yes, I can see the wireless card, but i'm interested to know if I can get the wifi led to light up when ever the wireless is on. bluetooth light comes up but wifi doesn't.

Just an update.

I've spoken with akts on IRC. The resolution is running 1280x800 as it should be, but the default font used in snapwm looks odd to akts.

I haven't used this spin, so I don't know what it's supposed to look like.

Maybe a font pack is missing or misconfigured?

The font snap isn't installed by default, I think but when I changed it to terminus in the .config/snapwm/rc.conf file the bar looks fine.

About the wireless and led issue, the led wont lit up but atleat I have wireless up and running with ceni after a sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

Now onto mounting usb drives :D . Thanks slartie. and bacon, this is a fine release man :)

1. plug in a USB drive.

2. use "lsblk" to show you the drive spec (sdb, sdc, whatever)

3. use "sudo mount /dev/sdX /mnt" to mount the device at the "/mnt" mountpoint (specify the drive you found in lsblk for "sdX").

4. use "sudo umount /mnt" to unmount the stick when you're done. Do not unplug the drive until this command completes.

You can create and use other mountpoints if you like (I use /media/, others mount somewhere in /home/).

If mounting as root annoys you, install "pmount" (or give yourself sudo privileges with no password to mount and umount); and if you really need "automounting" install "usbmount". Use "man pmount" and "man usbmount" to see how these packages work after you install them.

Of course you can bloat up the whole thing with lightdm, thunar, thunar-volman, gvfs, libpam-ck-blahblah, if you want it super-comfortable (and bloated), just sayin'.

For your led issue, I use this to prevent flickering, not sure if it helps, as root:
