Re: Setting up Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] [8086:4227]
I got the bright idea that bbq actually is debian sid (right?). So I googled and found somebody describing the problem with t61 and network on debian sid. He stated it was easyli fixed by running cine. I have run cine, but I am not sure what to do. Anybody who knows?

Now it makes sense. You haven't used Ceni yet? I was under the impression you had set it up already, sorry.
Open a terminal, make it a bit bigger than usually, then enter "sudo ceni", then:
- use the Tab key to jump between fields
- Enter or Space to select
- Cursor keys to move
1) So you start ceni,
2) and choose wlan0 in the upper part of the window (press Cursor key down), press Enter there.
3) You come to a new window, choose "Reconfigure wlan0" and press Enter.
4) In the next window, choose "Scan" and press Enter.
5) Next choose to which wireless network to connect, with cursor up/down.
6) When you found the one you want, press Enter.
7) In the next window use Tab to jump between fields, and tick boxes using the Space key:
"Encryption: WPA", "Mode: managed", (these are usually already set), there in "Preshared key" enter your network password there, then press Tab a few times (I think it is 3 times) to jump to "Accept" and press Enter. Ceni will build the connection up. After that just press Enter, and it exits.
Edit: added numbers to make it easier to follow

Re: Setting up Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] [8086:4227]
So that did not make much of a difference. I actually think darkside is running it automatically because I had to erase a file before being able to run Ceni. So if we are running out of ideas in the collective grill conciousness I will look for some different approach.

*how much* of a difference did that not make, so the wlan entry shows up?
how does your /etc/network/interfaces look like now?
try
if wlan0 -isn't there- you can try I'm just shooting in the dark here.
if it is there ... I don't know.

Code: Select all
sudo ifconfig

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
if it is there ... I don't know.
Re: Setting up Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] [8086:4227]
bacon's suggestions for Ceni are to be followed, however, before you do that, stop Network Manager. it will fuck with your shit. very sorry but i don't remember from the top of my head how to do that, and since i don't use it i cannot check. probably 'sudo systemctl stop Network<tab>' or 'sudo stop service Network<tab>' (dunno if systemd or not). BUT this is of course easily Googled.
somebody correct me if i'm wrong about this.

I vote for #!. You mentioned at least twice that wifi worked "out of the box" on that distro.powerpointsucker wrote:I will look for some different approach.

Did you finally configure your /e/n/i? We are shooting in the dark. Run ceni and configure wlan0, what is the error output? It is really easy. It will ask you to stop using NM.

pidsley just made a valid point.

@rho: Ceni asks if NM should be stopped, so no worries.

^ true, forgot. maybe my OCD made me always stop NM manually beforehand.

Re: Setting up Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] [8086:4227]
Not always ;) It's only turned on/off once, after installation of the OS. And if you run a BBQ then the network-manager is not activated. It's different in distros that run nm-applet later in the DE, for example.

Re: Setting up Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] [8086:4227]
ok, basically this. wlan0 is there when sudo iconfig. Ceni seems to do just fine. I am able to scan, detect and install the network. No errors as a far as I can see except there is no network.
I am all fine by going back to !# if we out of bullets

@dkeg that removed my cable as well as the wifi.
I will find a way to do copy paste and get the output up.
Just an ide, do you guys think it might be different with one of the other bbq spins?
